Nea Smyrni Municipality Launches Free Electric Bicycle Sharing System to Combat Traffic and Pollution
Nea Smyrni, May 9, 2026 – In a significant move to tackle traffic congestion and promote environmentally friendly transportation, the Municipality of Nea Smyrni has introduced a free electric bicycle sharing system. The initiative, which officially launched on May 8, 2026, aims to encourage residents and visitors to leave their cars behind and embrace a more sustainable mode of transport.
A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility
The new e-bike sharing system is part of the Municipality’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, reflecting a growing trend among Greek municipalities to offer such programs. The concept gained traction in 2012 when the Green Fund approved the installation of ‘Bicycle Sharing Systems’.
“This action invites citizens to leave their cars behind and choose a state-of-the-art bicycle, thus protecting the environment from harmful pollutant emissions,” stated a representative from the Municipality. The program seeks to change transportation behavior and culture within the urban fabric.
High-Tech Electric Bicycles for Urban Use
The electric bicycles provided are specifically designed for urban use, emphasizing durability and ease of operation. Each bike is equipped with a 250W motor, offering a range of over 60 kilometers and a maximum speed of 25 km/h. For enhanced security and real-time monitoring, integrated GPS/4G systems are included. Safety features such as lights, brakes, and an alarm system are also standard.
The bicycles are housed in special anti-vandalism locking and charging stations. These stations ensure secure docking and automatic battery charging while the bikes are parked. Integrated protection systems and robust construction guarantee continuous and easy operation for users.
How to Access the Free E-Bikes
Citizens can access the e-bike sharing system by downloading the dedicated ‘e-bike sharing’ application on their mobile phones. After selecting the Municipality of Nea Smyrni, users can register with a few simple steps. The application then displays available bicycles at various stations across the city, ready for use. Alternatively, users can scan the QR code displayed on the signage at each station.
A refundable deposit of 5 euros is required via debit card during registration. This amount is returned to the user upon the bicycle’s return to its designated station.
Seven Active Stations Across Nea Smyrni
The city is covered by seven active stations strategically located to maximize accessibility:
- Next to the Children’s Park of Ag. Paraskevi
- On Chalkis Milisiou Street, in front of the 12th Primary School
- At the junction of Efesou and Venizelou streets, in front of Alsos Park
- On Karillou Square, in the section between Ag. Zotinis and 25th Martiou streets, opposite the entrance of Polis Park
- At the junction of Ellispontou and Tataoulon streets, within the public green space
- Within the outdoor area of the Municipal Swimming Pool on Ag. Zotinis Street
- On Ag. Zotinis Street, opposite Thrakis Street
This initiative underscores Nea Smyrni’s commitment to modern and sustainable urban development, offering its residents a practical, free, and eco-friendly alternative for their daily commutes.
