CORFU, May 9 – The North Corfu Municipality has announced the full operational deployment of an advanced DJI Matrice 300 drone by the Fire Department, significantly bolstering fire surveillance and prevention efforts across the entire region. The drone, based in the community of Lavki, will provide continuous, round-the-clock monitoring throughout the fire season.

24/7 Surveillance and Real-Time Data Transmission

The state-of-the-art drone will operate day and night, ensuring constant vigilance over the area. Imagery captured by the drone is transmitted in real-time to the Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (E.S.K.E.D.I.K.) and the Regional Fire Services Command of the Ionian Islands (PEKE). This real-time data allows for immediate assessment of situations and rapid operational coordination, crucial for effective fire management.

The system boasts an impressive range, capable of operating many kilometers from its base. It is equipped with an ultra-high-definition camera, a 200x optical zoom, and a cutting-edge thermal camera. This thermal imaging capability allows it to detect even the slightest heat sources in inaccessible or forested areas, providing an invaluable tool for early fire detection.

Collaborative Effort for Enhanced Protection

The successful installation and operation of this system were made possible through the significant contribution and synergy of several key figures. Specifically, Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mr. Stefanos Gikas, and former Regional Commander of the Ionian Islands Fire Services, Major General (ret.) Athanasios Katsafados, played crucial roles. They recognized the heightened risk in the fire-prone area and collaborated effectively with the Mayor of North Corfu, Mr. Giorgos Macheimaris, and the Municipality’s civil protection department to secure the unit’s installation in Lavki, utilizing a municipal building that supports the system’s continuous operational function.

Deterrent and Multi-Purpose Capabilities

Beyond its primary role in fire prevention, the continuous 24-hour aerial surveillance also acts as a deterrent. Suspicious movements or activities in forested and isolated areas are recorded and monitored, contributing to the prevention of actions that could endanger the natural environment and public safety. The drone’s presence sends a clear message of vigilance, readiness, and protection.

Furthermore, the drone can be utilized in search and rescue (SAR) operations, locating missing persons, monitoring difficult-to-access areas, and managing emergencies and natural disasters. It provides critical real-time information to operational centers, enhancing overall emergency response capabilities.
