Prince Albert II of Monaco in Athens: Diplomatic Engagements and Marine Conservation Focus

Athens, April 21, 2026 – Prince Albert II of Monaco concluded a series of high-level meetings in Athens yesterday, emphasizing the enduring friendship and cooperation between Greece and Monaco, alongside critical discussions on initiatives aimed at protecting the Mediterranean marine ecosystem.

Meetings with Key Greek Officials

The Prince’s itinerary included significant encounters with President of the Hellenic Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas. These meetings underscored the shared commitment of both nations to diplomatic relations and environmental stewardship.

During his meeting with President Tasoulas, the leaders focused on the bilateral friendship and collaborative efforts to combat threats facing the Mediterranean’s marine environment. Prince Albert II, a staunch advocate for ocean conservation, highlighted Monaco’s ongoing commitment to these global challenges.

Earlier, Prince Albert II, accompanied by an official delegation including his director, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, an advisor from his office, and the Honorary Consul of Monaco in Greece, Dr. Vassilios Apostolopoulos (also president of the Athens Medical Group), met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Prime Minister Mitsotakis briefed the Prince on Greece’s plans to establish two new national marine parks, a move that aligns with Monaco’s own conservation efforts.

Following these high-level discussions, Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas welcomed Prince Albert II at the City Hall for a special event. During this reception, Mayor Doukas bestowed upon the Prince the Medal of the City of Athens, symbolizing the strong ties and mutual respect between the two entities. The visit to the City Hall also included further discussions between the Prince, the Mayor, and their respective delegations, followed by a guided tour of the historic building.

Inauguration of the Consulate of Monaco

The first round of Prince Albert’s engagements concluded with his presence at the inauguration of Monaco’s consulate in Greece. This event marks a significant step in strengthening the diplomatic and cultural presence of the Principality in Greece, facilitating further cooperation and exchanges.

The visit of Prince Albert II to Athens served to reinforce the existing bonds between Greece and Monaco, while also highlighting the urgent need for concerted action to protect the vital Mediterranean marine environment. Both nations reiterated their commitment to working together on these crucial issues, paving the way for future collaborative projects.
