Corfu, April 12 – Five individuals were arrested on Good Friday, April 10, 2026, in Corfu for illegal street vending. The arrests were made during intensified checks by officers of the Corfu Police Department and the Crime Prevention and Suppression Team (OPKE), targeting illegal trade in the historic city center and peripheral areas of the island.

Police Operations Combat Illegal Street Vending

During the festive Easter period, the Corfu Police Department has been conducting targeted operations to combat illegal street vending. These efforts aim to maintain order and ensure fair trade practices, particularly in high-traffic areas frequented by residents and visitors.

On Good Friday, these operations resulted in the apprehension of five local individuals who were found to be operating without the necessary permits. Their arrests highlight the ongoing commitment of local law enforcement to address and curb unauthorized commercial activities.

Over 260 Items Confiscated

As part of the arrests, authorities confiscated more than 260 items of illegal merchandise. The seized goods underscore the scale of the unauthorized vending activities that police are working to control. The confiscated items will be processed according to legal procedures.

Legal Proceedings and Fines Imposed

Following their arrests, the five individuals faced immediate legal proceedings under the ex-officio procedure. Administrative fines were imposed on each of the arrested individuals, as stipulated by relevant regulations concerning illegal street vending. These measures are intended to deter future offenses and reinforce compliance with commercial laws.

The Corfu Police Department has stated that these intensified checks will continue throughout the Easter holiday period to ensure public order and safety, as well as to protect legitimate businesses from unfair competition. The authorities emphasized that strict enforcement of regulations is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the local market.

Public and Business Community Response

The local business community has generally welcomed the police’s proactive stance against illegal street vending. Legitimate vendors often face significant disadvantages due to unauthorized sellers who do not comply with tax and regulatory obligations. Residents and tourists are also encouraged to report any suspicious vending activities to the authorities.

The operations are part of a broader strategy by the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece, and the Ionian Islands to ensure a safe and orderly environment during major public events and holidays. The successful implementation of such measures is vital for the region’s economic stability and public welfare.
