Corfu Philharmonic Society: A Legacy of 186 Years of Music

Corfu, April 6, 2026 – The Corfu Philharmonic Society, widely known as the ‘Old Philharmonic,’ marks 186 years of continuous musical contribution to the island of Corfu. This esteemed musical and educational institution, based in Corfu Town, was founded on September 12, 1840. Its primary aim was to establish the first Greek music academy structured upon European principles.

Founding and Early Years

The impetus for its creation arose from a ban imposed by the British administration of the island. Following the death of King William IV of the United Kingdom in 1837, the British army band was prohibited from participating in Orthodox religious events, specifically the procession of the sacred relics of Saint Spyridon, the island’s patron saint. This event underscored the need for a local musical institution.

The newly formed philharmonic was known to foreigners on the island as “La Banda Grecca.” Its first Artistic Director was the renowned composer Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros, who held this position until his passing in 1872.

Comprehensive Music Education

The Philharmonic Society offered a thoroughly organized curriculum encompassing both music theory and practical application. For the first time in modern Greek history, students from all social classes on the island had the opportunity to learn music. They received instruction from professional musicians and teachers in fundamental music theory, harmony, counterpoint, morphology, orchestration, and composition.

Today, the Philharmonic continues to offer a diverse range of departments, including:

  • Choir
  • Religious Choir
  • Strings
  • Piano
  • Youth Band
  • Wind Orchestra
  • Brass Quartet
  • Chamber Music
  • Jazz Orchestra
  • Vocal Department
  • Exhibition Department

Its most celebrated musical ensemble remains the band, which made its debut in August 1841. This is the same band that first performed the Greek National Anthem in 1864, composed by its director Nikolaos Mantzaros, and later the Olympic Anthem in 1896.

Historic Locations and Cultural Contributions

Initially, the Philharmonic was housed in a building in Pinia, the old commercial center of Corfu Town. Since 1900, it has been located in a building that originally belonged to the Theotokis family, which now also hosts the Philharmonic’s Museum. The Corfu Philharmonic Society, alongside the Society of Corfiot Studies and the Reading Society of Corfu, also co-owns the Capodistrias Museum, a gift from Maria Dessylla-Capodistria.

Annual Highlights and Enduring Traditions

Annually, a pinnacle moment for all philharmonic societies on the island, beyond the feast day of Saint Spyridon, are the celebrations of Holy Week and Easter. During this period, Corfu’s bands parade through the picturesque ‘kantounia’ (narrow streets), providing a melodic backdrop to the most significant festival of Orthodoxy. Crowds gather to witness these unique events.

Beyond the discipline, dedication, and love for music, one striking characteristic is the diverse age groups that comprise each philharmonic. It is common to see three and even four generations coexisting and performing together within a single musical ensemble. The island of Corfu boasts a rich musical tradition, where younger generations learn from their elders the melodies and sounds that reflect life itself, honoring the past, shaping the future, and consistently finding a way to touch the homes and souls of all Corfiots.
