Athens to Launch Free Municipal Transit Network with 17 Electric Buses
Athens, April 5 – The Municipality of Athens is set to launch a new free municipal transit network, dubbed “ATHENS MOVE,” next year. This initiative aims to make city travel faster and more accessible for residents, particularly in areas currently underserved by existing public transportation.
The network, developed by the Municipality of Athens, follows an extensive transport study that identified significant gaps in accessibility, a heavy reliance on private vehicles, and high travel costs in certain neighborhoods. The project has received approval from the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) and secured funding through the Social Climate Fund, ensuring its integration with the current OASA and metro services.
Bridging Accessibility Gaps
“Our goal is to reach vulnerable areas not served by current public transport,” stated V. Marinakis, chairman of Athens Development S.A. The existing public transport network largely prioritizes the city center, often requiring residents from outer neighborhoods to undertake multiple transfers for even short journeys, a situation the new system seeks to rectify.
The “ATHENS MOVE” system will feature four distinct lines, encompassing 185 stops, and will be operated by a fleet of 17 electric buses. The service will be entirely free of charge and designed to offer direct routes that do not necessarily pass through the congested city center.
Stops will be strategically placed approximately every 300 meters, with a higher density in more challenging, hilly terrains. Where feasible, these stops will be shared with the current OASA network to streamline travel and minimize delays for commuters.
New Routes to Connect Key Areas
The four new lines will connect various parts of the city, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times for thousands of residents. The planned routes are:
- Neos Kosmos – Petralona – Kerameikos
- Kato Patissia – Sepolia – Kerameikos
- Prompona – Ano Patissia – Kypseli
- Attiki – Kypseli
This project is designed to significantly improve urban mobility, reduce the walking distances to public transport stops, and provide a greener, more equitable urban transport solution for both Athens residents and visitors.
A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Living
The introduction of electric buses underscores Athens’ commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. By offering a free, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation option, the city aims to encourage a shift away from private vehicle use, thereby alleviating traffic congestion and improving air quality.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Athens Municipality to modernize its urban infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. It aligns with global trends towards smarter, more sustainable urban planning, ensuring that Athens remains a vibrant and accessible city for all.
The “ATHENS MOVE” network is anticipated to be a crucial component in Athens’ vision for a more connected and environmentally conscious future, addressing long-standing issues of urban accessibility and contributing to a healthier, more livable city environment.
