Police Break Migrant Smuggling Ring in Athens

Athens, March 31 – Police in Athens announced on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, that they have successfully dismantled a sophisticated migrant smuggling ring. The organization is alleged to have facilitated the illegal entry of migrants into Greece and provided them with forged documents to enable their travel through the European Union.

Operation Uncovers Dormitories and Forged Documents

A police statement detailed that the smuggling ring maintained at least three dormitories in Athens, offering temporary accommodation to migrants while their fraudulent travel documents were being prepared. This infrastructure highlights the organized nature and scale of the operation.

Last week, three individuals suspected of leading and operating this criminal organization were arrested. During the same operation, police also apprehended six migrants, aged between 19 and 53, who were found residing in one of the aforementioned dormitories.

Long-Running Operation Charged High Fees

According to police investigations, the ring is believed to have been active since at least September 2025. Their activities included organizing the illegal entry of migrants into Greece, arranging their transportation to Athens via long-distance buses, and subsequently providing them with lodging and counterfeit papers.

Each migrant reportedly paid a substantial fee for these services, ranging from €5,000 to €10,000. This significant cost underscores the profitability of such illicit operations and the desperation of those seeking passage through Europe.

Broader Context of Migration Crime in Greece

This latest bust comes amidst ongoing efforts by Greek authorities to combat migrant smuggling. Recent news has highlighted other related incidents, including the arrest of a Norwegian NGO head on similar allegations, the conviction of a Coast Guard officer for migrant-smuggling, and the dismantling of other fake document networks.

Furthermore, Rhodes has seen migrant smugglers facing felony-level offenses, and Greece has detained nearly 300 migrants under new illegal entry laws. These events collectively paint a picture of a persistent challenge for law enforcement agencies in the region.

The successful operation in Athens represents a significant blow to the networks exploiting vulnerable individuals and undermining border security. Investigations are expected to continue as authorities work to uncover further connections and prevent future such activities.
