Corfu, March 29 – Member of Parliament Alexandros Avlonitis held a productive meeting yesterday, March 28, 2026, with the Arillas Business Association (SEAK) in Arillas, a picturesque area in northwestern Corfu. The discussions focused on critical issues affecting the region, including persistent water supply problems, significant damage to the road network, and the detrimental effects of illegal street vending.
MP Avlonitis Addresses Arillas’ Urgent Concerns
The meeting, initiated by an invitation from SEAK, brought together MP Avlonitis with the association’s president, Nikos Goudelis, vice-president, Vassilis Argyros, secretary, Vassilis Mouzakitis, treasurer, Thodoros Krasakis, and members Giannis Giannotis, Zisis Antoniou, Dimitris Kourkoulos, Nikolaos Goudelis, and Anastasios Krasakis. This gathering followed a previous parliamentary inquiry by Avlonitis regarding the urgent need for road network restoration in the area.
Dominant Problem: Water Scarcity
A primary concern highlighted during the discussions was the severe water supply issue plaguing Corfu, particularly Arillas. Despite frequent rainfall, the region faces acute water shortages, which, according to the MP, are not being resolved by the government’s current measures or emergency declarations. Avlonitis emphasized the immediate necessity of implementing dam projects to address this chronic problem. Residents of Arillas frequently experience unacceptable and prolonged water interruptions.
Extensive Damage to the Road Network
Another significant issue raised was the widespread damage to the road network, a recurring problem across Corfu. In Arillas, immediate interventions are required at five critical points to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors, as well as to facilitate access for emergency vehicles. This issue has been a long-standing concern for the local community and businesses.
Combatting Illegal Street Vending
The need for decisive action against illegal street vending was also a key point of discussion. This illicit activity deprives both the state and legitimate businesses of valuable resources. MP Avlonitis expressed satisfaction that the local entrepreneurs, many of whom are young, are committed to preserving the local character of Arillas while respecting the area’s unique identity.
Commitment to Local Support and Future Actions
Following the meeting, MP Avlonitis issued a statement expressing his gratitude to the association for the discussion and the strong turnout. He reiterated his commitment to supporting the community’s demands and pledged to return to Arillas to continue advocating for their needs. “I will be by their side in their claims, because they deserve our support,” Avlonitis stated.
The Arillas Business Association members highlighted the importance of these discussions in bringing their concerns to the attention of political representatives. They hope that the dialogue will lead to concrete actions and solutions for the long-standing problems faced by their community and businesses.
This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to address infrastructure and economic challenges in Corfu, with a particular focus on sustainable development and support for local enterprises.
