North Corfu, March 23 – The Municipality of North Corfu has officially begun imposing fines for breaches of its Cleanliness Regulation, marking a new phase in its efforts to maintain environmental standards and public health. The first penalties were issued today, underscoring the municipality’s commitment to rigorous enforcement.
Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy and Environment, Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali, announced the development via social media, emphasizing the municipality’s priorities. “Protecting the environment, ensuring public health, and preserving the image of our region are paramount,” Kokkali stated. “Behaviors that degrade public spaces and impact the daily lives of residents and visitors will no longer be tolerated.”
Systematic Enforcement and Zero Tolerance
The municipality has made it clear that violations will now be met with consistent action, including inspections and the imposition of stipulated sanctions. This move follows a period of public awareness campaigns and is intended to foster a greater sense of responsibility among residents and businesses regarding waste management.
Addressing Bulky Waste Management
To facilitate proper waste disposal, the municipality reminds citizens of the available services for bulky items. Residents can contact the relevant department at 26633 60155 for home collection of large objects. Additionally, bulky items can be deposited at recycling corners located in Acharavi, Kassiopi, and Sidari. Many of these collected items are then repurposed for socially vulnerable groups, promoting a circular economy model.
Obligations for Businesses Regarding Construction Waste
Businesses are also being reminded of their legal obligations concerning the management of excavation, construction, and demolition waste (ECDW). According to current legislation (Ministerial Decision 36259/1757/E103/2010), businesses undertaking renovation or construction projects are required to enter into agreements with approved management systems for such waste.
The Municipality of North Corfu stresses that respect for public spaces and the natural environment is a collective responsibility. The municipality pledges to continue its consistent actions to ensure a clean and sustainable place for everyone.
