Corfu, March 23 – The Ionian University in Corfu, Greece, officially renamed its Ceremony Hall to the ‘Georgios Grammatikakis Hall’ on March 10, 2026. The ceremony honored the distinguished astrophysicist, cosmologist, and former President of the University’s Steering Committee (2000-2004).

A Tribute to a Visionary Leader

The event, held at the Ionian Academy, was attended by representatives of the Church, the State, and Local Government, members of the university community, and esteemed guests. It represented a highly symbolic moment for the academic memory and history of the institution.

In his address, the Rector of the Ionian University, Professor Andreas Floros, emphasized that the ceremony was not merely a commemorative event but “a unique moment of historical memory, collective gratitude, and responsibility.” He highlighted that Georgios Grammatikakis was a personality who “supported the institution during a critical period and led it to its autonomous operation,” leaving “an indelible mark” on its academic trajectory.

Grammatikakis’s Enduring Legacy

Greetings were also extended by the Deputy Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Christos Anthis, representing the Regional Governor Mr. Ioannis Trepeklis. The Vice-Rector for Planning, Development, and Insularity, Professor Andreas Georgotas, in his honorary speech, described the renaming as “an act of deep realization” of the institution’s history and identity. He lauded Georgios Grammatikakis as a “beacon of modern Greek education” and a champion of academic freedom and public education.

A particularly moving moment was the address by the late Mr. Grammatikakis’s wife, Mrs. Eva Grammatikaki. She spoke of his close relationship with the Ionian University and Corfu, recalling his contribution to the establishment of the institution and his belief in the connection between science and art. As she noted, “it is the greatest possible honor for a man who dedicated his life to Education, the connection of his name with the Ionian Academy.”

Ceremony Highlights and Artistic Tribute

The ceremony included, among other things, the reading of the relevant decision of the Rectorate Council regarding the renaming, the screening of a tribute video, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the Rector and Mrs. Eva Grammatikaki.

The event concluded with a musical epilogue by students from the Department of Music Studies (DMS) of the Ionian University, who performed works for guitar, piano, and voice. The Ionian Camerata of the Ionian University also performed, offering a final farewell and tribute to Georgios Grammatikakis, highlighting the timeless connection between science and art – a value that characterized the work of the honored scientist.
