Corfu, March 20 – The island of Corfu has been officially declared in a state of emergency, a decision made by the Ministry of Environment and Energy. This declaration comes after sustained pressure from local stakeholders regarding the urgent need to progress with water supply projects. The state of emergency will be in effect for a minimum period of three months, a crucial step to address the island’s persistent water scarcity issues.

Unlocking Vital Water Infrastructure Projects

The primary objective of this declaration is to “unlock” essential restoration works for the existing water supply network and to initiate new projects designed to enhance water reserves. These efforts will primarily focus on the municipal units of Corfu and Achilleion (Gastouri), areas that have been particularly affected by water shortages.

This decision directly enables the activation of a credit line of 1.6 million euros, which has been allocated to Corfu since November 2024. The move follows a proposal from the Regulatory Authority for Energy and Water, underscoring the critical nature of the situation.

Addressing a Long-Standing Water Shortage

Corfu has been grappling with a significant water scarcity problem, with underground water resources experiencing considerable pressure over the past two hydrological years. This prolonged period of drought and increased demand has led to the depletion of vital water sources, making the current intervention absolutely necessary.

Mayor St. Poulimenos expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating that it was anticipated given the submission of all relevant requests. “This is something we expected, as all the necessary applications had been submitted,” Poulimenos remarked, highlighting the proactive efforts made by local authorities.

Impact on Local Communities and Future Outlook

The implementation of these projects is expected to bring significant relief to the residents and businesses of Corfu, particularly those in the affected municipal units. Improved water infrastructure will ensure a more stable and reliable water supply, mitigating the challenges faced during periods of high demand, especially during the tourist season.

While the state of emergency provides a temporary framework for expedited action, it also underscores the long-term need for sustainable water management strategies on the island. The projects initiated under this declaration are anticipated to lay the groundwork for a more resilient water supply system in Corfu.

Authorities will closely monitor the progress of these works throughout the three-month period, with a focus on efficient resource allocation and timely completion. The collaborative effort between the Ministry of Environment and Energy, local authorities, and regulatory bodies is crucial for the successful implementation of these vital infrastructure improvements.
