Background of the Mavromati Customs Scandal
The case gained significant attention in July 2025 when, following a months-long investigation by the Internal Affairs Division of the Hellenic Police, 14 customs officials were arrested. The charges against them include bribery, corruption, and dereliction of duty. The investigation revealed that these officials allegedly facilitated incomplete inspections or the illicit transfer of goods in exchange for financial gain.
The recently apprehended foreign national is being taken to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Thesprotia. Investigations are actively continuing to locate and apprehend other individuals involved in this extensive bribery scheme.
