Corfu, March 14 – A significant infrastructure project to construct a new connecting road at the Corfu Airport Bypass is moving forward, aiming to resolve long-standing traffic issues and enhance road safety in the area. The agreement for the “Construction of Connecting Road of Airport Bypass” project was officially signed yesterday at the Mayor’s office with the contracting company “A. Anthis – V. Draganigos – I. Pantazis O.E.” operating under the distinctive title “KORYFO TECHNIKI.”
Project Details and Scope
The project involves the construction of a 130-meter long and 15-meter wide road, featuring 2.5-meter wide sidewalks on each side. It will include comprehensive infrastructure for lighting, water supply, and sewage networks. Additionally, provisions for future connections and empty conduits are planned to prevent the need for future excavations, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the new infrastructure.
This new road will specifically address the bottleneck created by the Airport Bypass at Don. Dimoulitsa Street, connecting it seamlessly with the bypass near the Intercity KTEL.
Funding and Technical Execution
The realization of this project was significantly facilitated by the contribution of METRO AEBE, which in June 2025 expressed its intention to fund the construction of a section of the road in front of its S/M store, opposite the Intercity KTEL.
The Technical Services Department of the Municipality completed the study for the road’s construction from the KTEL point to “Skiadopoulos” paint shop by August 2025, in accordance with the approved urban plan “Pagrateika.” The total budget for this part of the project is estimated at 465,000 euros.
METRO AEBE’s donation covers an 80-meter section, valued at 330,000 euros. The Municipality supplemented the project by modifying the Technical Program and allocating an additional 135,000 euros for the construction of the remaining 50 meters, which were tendered through an open competition.
Approvals and Timeline
The Technical Services Department promptly secured the necessary approvals from the Archaeology Department and relevant environmental agencies. This allowed for the immediate implementation of the donated section under its supervision, as well as the tendering of the remaining part of the project, for which the contract was signed yesterday.
The total construction period for the project is set at eight (8) months from the contract signing date. Upon completion, the modern road infrastructure will be opened to traffic, significantly facilitating access for residents and businesses in the area, while also resolving critical road safety issues.
This development is expected to have a positive impact on the daily commute and overall urban mobility in Corfu, particularly in the vicinity of the airport and the Intercity KTEL.
