Athens, March 7 – The 14th Athens Half Marathon is set to return to the Greek capital tomorrow, March 8, 2026, with an unprecedented number of participants. The event boasts 6,000 additional entries compared to the previous year and introduces a new 5km road race, expanding its appeal to a wider range of runners.

Event Dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis and International Women’s Day

This year’s half marathon is dedicated to the revered late Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, paying tribute to his lasting legacy. Concurrently, the event coincides with International Women’s Day, celebrating women’s significant contributions to society and their increasing participation in sports. This dual dedication underscores the event’s cultural and social significance.

Established in the 1960s, the 21km half marathon distance gained popularity as a more accessible alternative to the classic 42km marathon. The event received official recognition from the World Athletics Federation in 1990. The first Athens Half Marathon was organized in 2012 through a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Athens and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS).

“The Athens Half Marathon is now one of the most important running institutions in the country,” stated SEGAS President Sofia Sakorafa. She emphasized that the event successfully merges the spirit of sport with the rich history and inherent charm of the Greek capital, offering a unique experience for participants and spectators alike.

Race Categories and Schedule

The 2026 Athens Half Marathon features three distinct race categories to accommodate various fitness levels and preferences:

  • Half Marathon: Limited to 12,000 runners, this 21km race is the flagship event, challenging seasoned participants.
  • 5km Road Race: With a participation limit of 15,000 runners, this new addition offers a shorter, more accessible option for recreational runners and those new to the sport.
  • Family Run (1,000m): Designed for all ages, this 1km race encourages family participation with a limit of 2,500 runners, fostering a sense of community and promoting active lifestyles.

The Half Marathon is scheduled to commence at 8:00 AM and is expected to conclude by 11:30 AM. The 5km Road Race will kick off at 12:15 PM, finishing by 2:10 PM. The Family Run will begin at 10:45 AM, providing a vibrant start to the day’s events.

A Scenic Route Through Historic Athens

The race routes are meticulously designed to showcase Athens’ rich cultural heritage, guiding runners past some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the historical grandeur of Syntagma Square, the Hellenic Parliament, and the solemn Monument to the Unknown Soldier. The picturesque National Garden and the neoclassical Zappeion Hall will also be part of the scenic journey.

Further along the course, runners will pass the esteemed Academy of Athens, the National Library of Greece, the National Historical Museum, and the National Archaeological Museum, immersing themselves in centuries of Greek history and art. The route also includes the National Technical University of Athens, the historic Panathenaic Stadium, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, and Hadrian’s Gate. The iconic Runner statue and the Athens Concert Hall complete the impressive itinerary, offering a unique blend of ancient and modern Athens.

Traffic Regulations for the Event

To ensure the safety of participants and the smooth execution of the event, the Hellenic Police has announced special traffic regulations. These measures will be in effect for a number of key streets and avenues in Athens, including Vasilissis Amalias, Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Akadimias, Solonos, and Filellinon avenues. Omonia and Syntagma squares will also be affected, along with Patision (28th October Street), from Aghios Meletiou to Omonia. Additionally, traffic adjustments will be made on Syngrou Avenue, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Kifissias and Alexandra avenues, Mesogeion Avenue, and Piraeus Street. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and be aware of potential delays.

The Athens Half Marathon continues to grow in stature, solidifying its position as a premier sporting event that not only promotes physical activity but also celebrates the cultural and historical essence of the Greek capital. With record participation and a new race category, the 2026 edition promises to be a memorable experience for both runners and spectators.
