Greece Unveils Comprehensive Restoration Plan for Athens’ Herodeon

Athens, February 26 – Greece has announced a comprehensive restoration plan for the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Herodeon), the iconic Roman theater situated beneath the Acropolis. The initiative, revealed by the Greek Ministry of Culture, seeks to address structural wear, modernize infrastructure, and preserve one of the nation’s most significant cultural landmarks.

National Technical University of Athens to Lead Studies

The Greek Culture Ministry has entrusted the National Technical University of Athens with the critical task of conducting the restoration studies. This collaboration aims to bolster the monument’s structural integrity and upgrade its facilities, ensuring that the enhancements respect both its historical character and the surrounding urban landscape.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni emphasized the project’s overarching goal: “Our goal, upon completion of the works, is for the monument to be adequately protected against natural and human-induced damage, improved in terms of legibility and fully upgraded to support the functional requirements of modern cultural events, foremost among them the Athens Festival.”

Extensive Scope of Restoration Works

The restoration efforts will encompass crucial structural components and visitor-centric areas of the monument. Key interventions include:

  • Recovery of damaged walls and architectural elements
  • Restoration of the dome and staircase
  • Reinforcement of the southern stage wall
  • Reconstruction of the loggia (covered colonnaded gallery) and its perimeter wall
  • Revelation of the stage building and its mosaic floors, which are currently not visible to the public

In the Stage Hall, restoration efforts will redefine its outline, facilitating the installation of temporary performance structures. Upgrades to the Foreground are designed to enhance safety and accessibility while maintaining architectural clarity.

Further interventions will focus on the side arches, facades, and the curved wall, where the monument’s original geometry will be reinstated to improve both structural coherence and visitor circulation. Conservation of the original marble seating in the cavea, the theater’s tiered seating area, will continue, with selective seat additions addressing wear from audience use.

The Promenade area will be restored to shield nearby archaeological remains from foot traffic. Additionally, the rehabilitation of the eastern staircase and connecting routes will reinforce the historical link between the Odeon, the Stoa of Eumenes, and the broader Acropolis pathways, known as the Peripatos.

The comprehensive plan also incorporates the installation of a new semi-circular lighting and support structure, replacing existing scaffolding. Essential upgrades to the water supply system and a reconstruction of the external sewage network are also part of the project.

Upon its completion, the project is expected to ensure the monument’s long-term preservation while guaranteeing its full functionality for contemporary cultural events, securing its place as a vibrant hub for arts and culture in Athens.
