Achilleion Palace in Corfu to Undergo Major Restoration and Promotion
Corfu, February 25 – The Ionian Islands Region has officially initiated a significant project for the restoration and promotion of the historic Achilleion Palace. Regional Governor Giannis Trepeklis signed a call for proposals for the “IONIAN ISLANDS 2021-2027” Program, allocating 5,055,000 euros for the comprehensive undertaking.
The initiative aims to leverage the rich cultural heritage of the Ionian Islands Region to support both the local community and economy. The project specifically focuses on interventions within the cultural sector, particularly cultural heritage, coupled with actions designed to enhance visitor numbers.
Detailed Scope of the Restoration Project
The allocated funding will facilitate several key phases of the restoration and enhancement of the Achilleion Palace complex:
- Phase A: This includes the completion of conservation and restoration services for selected painted decorations (frescoes) within the palace building. It also covers the design, production, and implementation of multimedia applications, digital processing, and printing of supervisory materials. Oversight will be provided by the competent services of the Ministry of Culture.
- Phase B: This phase incorporates sub-projects for which expenses have already been incurred. These include the restoration and enhancement of the Achilleion complex (the subject of an uncompleted contract), the conservation of fixed and movable exhibits, frescoes, and plasters, as well as the production of supervisory material and the implementation of the museological-museographic study for the Palace Exhibition (the subject of an uncompleted Ministry of Culture project).
- Phase C: Beyond the co-financed actions, the completion of the restoration of the palace building and the gatehouse, the landscaping of the forecourt, and other works contributing to the overall enhancement of the Achilleion complex will be implemented under a single contract. This particular part of the project will be fully funded by the Project Owner (ETAD).
Emphasizing Cultural Value and Public Engagement
Throughout the implementation of these actions, a strong emphasis will be placed on systematically communicating the value of the cultural assets to the wider public, including non-Greek speakers, in a direct and understandable manner. This public engagement strategy may include, for each Action and as sub-projects thereof:
- Signage and interpretive panels.
- Informative materials (e.g., guides, brochures, and Braille script).
- Audiovisual material.
- Educational activities.
- Communication, promotion, and publicity actions (e.g., workshops, conferences), utilizing new technologies where feasible.
The promotion of monuments and the broader cultural heritage will also highlight their significant contribution to the local economy and society.
This comprehensive restoration and promotion effort is expected to breathe new life into the iconic Achilleion Palace, making it an even more compelling destination for tourists and a source of pride for the local community, while also boosting the region’s economic prospects.
