Corfu Teachers’ Union Rallies Against Defamation Conviction
Corfu, February 24, 2026 – The Corfu Teachers’ Union (ELME) has issued a call for a three-hour work stoppage and a rally outside the Court of Appeals on Thursday, February 26th, and potentially Friday, February 27th. This action is in solidarity with members of its Board of Directors who were initially convicted of defamation.
Background of the Case
The defamation charges stem from a complaint issued by the union, based on testimonies and grievances from colleagues. The lawsuit was filed by the then-director of the 4th High School, who is now the Director of Secondary Education in Corfu and a long-standing education sector advisor for the New Democracy party’s local branch (DEEP).
The initial conviction, which included prison sentences and fines, has been described by ELME as a dangerous development for union activities and freedoms within the education sector. The union argues that this ruling not only affects its board members but also all educators and workers who advocate, denounce, and fight for their rights.
Union’s Stance and Actions
ELME reiterates that public statements and the issuance of announcements are fundamental and guaranteed means of action for all unions. They view the attempt to criminalize this practice as opening dangerous avenues for silencing and intimidation.
In response, ELME has declared a three-hour work stoppage for Thursday, February 26th, from 11:00 AM to 2:10 PM. The Federation of Secondary Education Teachers (OLME), following ELME’s request, has also announced a three-hour work stoppage from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the same day. Should the trial continue on Friday, February 27th, similar work stoppages will be implemented by both ELME and OLME.
Broader Implications for Unionism
The union emphasizes that this case is not isolated but is part of a broader trend of increasing authoritarianism, disciplinary prosecutions, and attempts to restrict union activity, particularly in education. The objective, according to ELME, is to impose a “graveyard silence” against arbitrariness, anti-democratic practices, and policies that degrade public education.
The Board of Directors of ELME Corfu asserts that the union will not be intimidated or terrorized and will continue to defend its colleagues and their rights, as well as the educational rights of students. They pledge to continue denouncing arbitrary actions, supporting every educator, and striving for a public and free education system that meets the needs of students and society.
ELME calls upon colleagues, unions, parents, and students to stand with the Corfu Teachers’ Union and express their solidarity. They conclude by stating that the defense of union action is everyone’s responsibility, and no one should face persecution alone. “The struggle continues,” they declare.
