Athens, February 24 – The Acropolis Museum in Athens is preparing to host a major exhibition featuring more than 100 pre-Christian artifacts from the History Museum of Armenia. This significant cultural event is scheduled for the fall of 2026 and aims to introduce Armenia’s ancient heritage to a global audience.

Cooperation Memorandum Signed Between Museums

The initiative follows the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the two institutions on February 19, 2026. The agreement was formalized during Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan’s state visit to Greece. The signing ceremony took place at the Acropolis Museum, with David Poghosyan, Director of the History Museum of Armenia, and Nikolaos Stampolidis, Director General of the Acropolis Museum, as signatories.

David Poghosyan highlighted the memorandum as a pivotal moment, building upon previous discussions held during Stampolidis’s visit to Yerevan the preceding year. He emphasized that the upcoming exhibition will present Armenia’s ancient pre-Christian artifacts to a global audience, leveraging the Acropolis Museum’s annual attraction of over one million visitors from Greece and worldwide.

Showcasing Armenia’s Pre-Christian Legacy

Nikolaos Stampolidis echoed Poghosyan’s sentiments, describing the partnership as a crucial step to broaden the understanding of Armenian civilization. He noted that Armenia is frequently associated with its post-Christian era, and this exhibition is designed to illuminate its rich pre-Christian legacy for the museum’s diverse international visitors.

The exhibition will offer a prominent platform to introduce Armenia’s historical and cultural treasures to millions, thereby fostering greater awareness of its ancient roots. This collaboration signifies an enhanced partnership between the two institutions, encompassing professional exchanges and joint projects.

The Acropolis Museum, a globally recognized institution, is expected to draw significant attention to the Armenian exhibition, further cementing its role as a hub for international cultural exchange. The display of these ancient artifacts is anticipated to provide invaluable insights into Armenia’s deep historical narrative, predating the adoption of Christianity as a state religion.

This cultural exchange is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between Greece and Armenia, two nations with rich historical and cultural heritages. The exhibition is expected to be a highlight of the 2026 cultural calendar, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the lesser-known aspects of Armenian history.

The artifacts, carefully selected from the History Museum of Armenia, will offer a comprehensive look at the artistic, social, and religious practices of pre-Christian Armenia. This includes items that reflect daily life, ceremonial objects, and artistic expressions from various periods before the 4th century AD, when Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion.

Further details regarding the specific artifacts to be displayed and associated educational programs will be announced closer to the exhibition date. The Acropolis Museum anticipates a high level of international interest in this unique presentation of Armenian heritage.
