Corfu, February 21, 2026 – The iconic Canal D’Amour in Sidari, Corfu, is facing an unprecedented threat from coastal erosion, with the sea steadily reclaiming larger sections of the coastline. The situation has reached a critical point, endangering nearby businesses and raising serious concerns for the island’s vital tourism industry.
Erosion Reaches Critical Levels, Threatening Businesses
Local businesses along the Canal D’Amour are now directly impacted, with the erosion having advanced significantly close to their establishments. In some areas, parts of their infrastructure have already been swept away, putting hotels and restaurants at risk. This escalating problem has led to fears among entrepreneurs regarding the safety and viability of operating during the upcoming tourist season.
A Decade of Unheeded Warnings
Entrepreneurs in the area have been vocal for at least a decade, consistently calling for the implementation of protective measures to mitigate wave action and safeguard the remaining sections of the canal. Spyros Avlonitis, a local hotelier, highlighted in an interview on ERTnews’ ‘Syndeseis’ program that the situation has been a recurring problem for the past ten years. He emphasized that while extreme weather events have exacerbated the issue, the primary cause is the lack of preventative interventions.
“For the past 10 years, we have been witnessing the same scenario. We cannot, in any way, blame the weather phenomena for this inadequacy. The weather phenomena came and completed the work that was never done. For 10 years now, we have been sounding the alarm. Mayors, deputy mayors, MPs, ministers have passed through here, have seen the place, have promised changes, have promised small and large interventions, which in the end never happened, and we have reached the current situation,” stated Mr. Avlonitis.
Fears for the Tourist Season and Economic Impact
The severity of the erosion has led some business owners to consider delaying or even foregoing opening for the initial months of the tourist season, citing safety concerns. Bookings, they explain, are heavily reliant on the island’s picturesque image and attractions, with its beaches being a primary draw for visitors. The potential disruption to tourism could have significant economic repercussions for the region.
Urgent Need for Intervention
The ongoing crisis at Canal D’Amour underscores the urgent need for governmental and local authorities to prioritize and implement effective coastal protection projects. The long-standing calls from the community for action highlight a critical gap in infrastructure maintenance and environmental protection. Without immediate and comprehensive interventions, one of Corfu’s most famous natural landmarks and a significant contributor to its tourism economy remains in jeopardy.
