Experiential Tour at Antinioti Lagoon Draws 100 Participants
On Saturday, February 14, an experiential tour of Antinioti Lagoon, one of Corfu’s most significant wetlands and a protected Natura 2000 site, was successfully conducted. The event saw the participation of 100 students and professors who embarked on an approximately 5-kilometer journey. The route traversed dirt roads and asphalt paths, offering participants a direct encounter with the dunes, coastal formations, and the unique natural beauty of the area.
Historical and Environmental Significance Highlighted
During the tour, participants also visited the Holy Monastery of Agia Aikaterini on Nisi, a historic 13th-century monument that overlooks the lagoon and serves as a landmark for the region. This visit provided an opportunity to connect the natural environment with the rich cultural history of Corfu.
Accompanying the students were Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali, Deputy Mayor of Environment and Circular Economy, and Mr. Panagiotis Papadatos, President of the Municipal Council of North Corfu. They elaborated on the importance of ecosystem protection, the interrelation between nature and culture, and the significance of sustainable development for the future of the region.
Community Involvement and Future Collaborations
Members of the Civil Protection of the North Corfu Municipality and the Federal Game Wardens also participated in the event, contributing to the safe and organized conduct of the tour. Their presence highlighted the community’s collective effort in preserving natural heritage.
The day concluded with the cutting of the New Year’s pie for the members of the University Gymnasium, held in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Treats were generously provided by the ‘Philippos Vlachos’ Association of Peritheia residents.
The North Corfu Municipality consistently pursues its collaboration with the Ionian University, investing in environmental education, active youth participation, and the substantive promotion of the region’s natural and cultural wealth. This partnership aims to instill a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the local environment among future generations.
