Athens, February 12 – In a groundbreaking environmental initiative, DIMAND has inaugurated the first urban apiary on a modern office building rooftop in the heart of Athens, specifically on the historic MINION building. This marks the first time beehives have been hosted on the rooftop of a contemporary office building within a dense urban fabric, actively bolstering biodiversity and sustainable urban development in the city.
Pioneering Urban Beekeeping in a Densely Populated Capital
Athens, one of Europe’s most densely built capitals with only 2-2.5 square meters of green space per resident, is now home to an innovative project that highlights the potential role of modern buildings in improving the urban environment. This initiative supports urban beekeeping and greening rooftops across neighborhoods.
Since September 2025, more than 30,000 bees have been residing on the planted rooftop of the MINION building, contributing to the pollination of millions of plants and flowers. Their activity enhances urban vegetation, improves air quality, and creates conditions for a more resilient and healthy urban ecosystem.
Bees: Crucial for Ecological Balance and Environmental Awareness
Bees, as key pollinators, are critical for maintaining ecological balance. Their presence in the urban fabric also carries a significant social dimension, serving an educational purpose by raising awareness among residents and strengthening environmental consciousness.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the organization Bee for Planet, as part of DIMAND’s ESG strategy. It is integrated into their comprehensive approach to developing ‘green’ and sustainable buildings that respect both the environment and people.
DIMAND’s Commitment to Environmental Impact
Vicky Anagnostopoulou, Head of CSR at DIMAND Group, stated, “Every initiative we undertake begins with a fundamental question: what footprint do we leave on the city? With this particular action, we chose a solution that combines care, consistency, and a real environmental impact, contributing substantially to the improvement of the urban landscape.”
Evangelia Glezakou, Senior Sustainability Manager at DIMAND Group, added, “For us, sustainability is action. Small, well-thought-out movements that, like bees, may go unnoticed but leave a deep and substantial mark on the environment and society.”
Maria Toutoudaki, Head of Marketing & Communications at DIMAND Group, emphasized, “With the motto ‘bee THE CHANGE,’ we want to remind everyone that change starts with us. At DIMAND, we actively support biodiversity by bringing bees into the urban fabric. We invest in actions with a significant social and environmental footprint, reaffirming our commitment to a more collective future and sustainable, resilient cities.”
MINION Building: A Model of Environmental Innovation
With this new initiative, the emblematic MINION building acquires yet another modern role, serving as a model of environmental innovation and responsible urban development. The installation of beehives at MINION is part of DIMAND’s broader effort to redefine the role of rooftops and urban surfaces, transforming them into vibrant green spaces filled with life.
