Police Operation Targets Illegal Power Connections in Western Athens

Athens, February 11, 2026 – A significant police operation conducted on Monday and Tuesday in the western outskirts of Athens has led to the arrest of 12 individuals for illegal power connections. The crackdown, which focused on makeshift settlements in the areas of Fyli and Aharnes, also resulted in the seizure of 520 meters of cables used to illegally tap into the power grid.

Details of the Crackdown

According to a police statement released on Tuesday, the arrests were made during targeted raids in areas predominantly inhabited by Roma people. The individuals apprehended face a range of charges, including power theft and breaches of personal data protection laws. The operation highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to combat illegal activities that strain public infrastructure and pose safety risks.

The confiscated cables, measuring more than half a kilometer in total, underscore the scale of the illegal connections. Such illicit setups not only lead to significant financial losses for utility companies but can also create hazardous conditions, including fire risks and unstable power supply for legitimate users.

Broader Context of Energy and Crime in Greece

This crackdown comes as Greece prepares to introduce new energy tariffs designed to offer consumers more flexibility and potentially lower costs. As of February for large businesses and April for smaller ones and households, new ‘orange’ power rates will become available. These tariffs will allow for pricing consumption per hour, provided a smart meter is installed. This initiative aims to empower consumers to adjust their consumption during off-peak hours when wholesale electricity rates are lower, promoting energy efficiency and reducing overall costs.

The issue of illegal power connections is not isolated, with other crime-related incidents frequently reported across Greece. Recent news includes eight arrests made in connection with a mass street brawl in Athens, an individual detained for a scam that defrauded vulnerable people of thousands of euros, and a fourth arrest in northern Greece concerning fake €20 notes. Furthermore, a Greek suspect in the death of a German train conductor had previously been flagged for aggression, indicating a broader struggle with various forms of criminality.

Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of legal and safe access to utilities, while simultaneously working to modernize the energy sector to benefit all citizens.
