Athens to Lefkada in 3 Hours – New Motorway Nears Completion in Western Greece
Athens, February 11, 2026 – The journey from Athens to the popular Ionian island of Lefkada is set to become dramatically faster and safer with the imminent completion of a significant road infrastructure project in Western Greece. Major roadworks on the Vonitsa-Lefkada section and the already completed Aktio-Agios Nikolaos bypass are expected to reduce journey time to around 3 hours on modern, safe roads.
Greece’s ambitious road infrastructure programme continues to gain momentum, with one of the country’s most transformative projects now reshaping travel in Western Greece and bringing the long-promised dramatic reduction in journey times ever closer to reality.
Upgrading National Road Network
Over the past few years, the Greek government has placed renewed emphasis on upgrading and modernising the national road network. Large-scale works are underway across several strategic axes, with the dual goals of improving road safety, enhancing journey comfort, and, crucially, substantially shortening travel times between Athens and the regions.
Western Greece is benefiting particularly strongly from this renewed focus. The new roads and motorways under construction are expected to unlock significant economic and tourism potential by making private travel, business journeys, and freight transport faster, safer, and more reliable – delivering a major boost to the wider regional economy.
Key Sections of the Project
Two key sections form the backbone of the current transformation in the area:
- The 16 km Vonitsa-Lefkada link, which will finally provide a fast, modern connection to the island.
- The Aktio-Agios Nikolaos section, already completed and opened to traffic in April 2023.
Together, these form part of the larger Aktio-Amvrakia corridor, designed to tie the beautiful coastal and tourist regions of Western Greece securely into the Ionia Odos motorway backbone.
The section currently under construction is the direct continuation of the already operational Aktio-Agios Nikolaos stretch (5.4 km), built to full contemporary motorway standards with one lane in each direction plus an emergency lane.
Game-Changer for Lefkada
For residents of Lefkada and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who travel to the island every year, the new road is genuinely game-changing. It removes the last remaining narrow, outdated, and often hazardous stretches of the old connection between the island and mainland Aetolia-Acarnania.
Once both sections are finished, the entire Athens-Lefkada route will be covered by modern, high-standard roads – allowing the journey to be completed in approximately three hours under normal conditions, with far greater safety and comfort than in the past.
A recent drone video uploaded by the YouTube channel n.p. production offers an impressive aerial view of the ongoing works. The footage clearly shows large-scale earthmoving, road-base construction, interchange development, and other major civil engineering activities that are now well advanced.
The completion of this corridor is set to become one of the most tangible improvements in Greek connectivity in recent years – and another important step in making the Ionian islands even more accessible for both domestic travellers and international visitors.
