Athens, February 9 – The city’s metro network is set to be significantly enhanced with the introduction of new and refurbished trains as part of a comprehensive €500 million upgrade program. This initiative aims to bolster service reliability, elevate passenger comfort, and increase train frequency across all three lines of the Athens Metro.
Extensive Investment to Modernize Athens’ Public Transport
The extensive upgrade program, developed through a collaborative effort between the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, STASY (the operator of Athens’ urban rail network), and Elliniko Metro (the state-owned project delivery company), encompasses both the refurbishment of existing rolling stock and the procurement of brand-new trains. The total investment is projected to exceed 500 million euros, signifying a substantial commitment to modernizing the city’s public transportation infrastructure. By the close of the decade, a total of 51 trains are expected to meet contemporary operational standards, forming the bedrock of public transport that serves Athens’ bustling city center, its numerous major attractions, and Athens International Airport.
Lines 2 and 3: Enhancing Comfort and Extending Lifespan
For Lines 2 and 3, plans are actively underway to refurbish 12 first-generation trains. These trains, which currently operate without air conditioning, will undergo significant upgrades. The project, with a budget of approximately 106 million euros, is being financed through the 2021-2027 ESPA program. The refurbishment will include the installation of modern air-conditioning systems and upgraded electromechanical equipment, effectively extending the operational lifespan of these trains. The first of these refurbished units are anticipated to re-enter service from 2028, promising a more comfortable journey for commuters.
New Trains to Drive Increased Frequency and Reduced Waiting Times
In a parallel development, the metro operator is poised to acquire 15 new trains. Seven of these new additions are designated for the Airport Line, while the remaining eight will be integrated into the conventional network. These new trains are expected to facilitate denser timetables and significantly reduce waiting times, aiming for frequencies as low as three minutes during peak hours. This enhancement represents a crucial improvement for both the city’s daily commuters and the multitude of visitors exploring Athens.
Line 1 Upgrades Continue to Boost Service
On Line 1, historically known as ISAP (the electric railway), refurbishment works are already in progress for 14 trains. A second phase of this project is planned for an additional 10 units. Upon the completion of these works by 2029, Line 1 is projected to operate with 24 upgraded trains, enabling more frequent services and an overall improved passenger experience.
Strengthening Urban Mobility for a Sustainable Future
Collectively, this substantial investment is strategically aimed at strengthening Athens’ urban mobility system. It underscores a commitment to supporting sustainable transport solutions and enhancing the quality of service in a city that facilitates millions of passenger journeys annually. The upgrades are expected to contribute to a more efficient, reliable, and comfortable public transportation experience, benefiting both residents and tourists alike.
Future Outlook
The comprehensive modernization of the Athens Metro network is a testament to the city’s dedication to improving its infrastructure and embracing sustainable urban development. With new and refurbished trains, enhanced comfort, and increased frequency, Athens is poised to offer a world-class public transport system that meets the growing demands of its dynamic urban landscape.
