Corfu Central OGE Calls for Action: Rally for Public Healthcare on Tuesday
Corfu, February 9, 2026 – The Corfu Central OGE (Federation of Women of Greece) has issued a statement announcing its participation in a Pan-Corfiot Rally set to take place on Tuesday, February 10th, at 6:00 PM at Porta Reale. The organization highlights the critical and dangerous conditions prevailing at the Corfu General Hospital, attributing them to a conscious policy of degradation.
The statement emphasizes the severe shortages in doctors and nursing staff, the exhaustion of current employees, and the underperformance of various clinics. Consequently, citizens are forced to bear out-of-pocket expenses or seek medical care outside the island for even basic treatment. The OGE asserts that the health of the people is being relegated to a secondary priority.
Hospital Conditions: A Dire Reality for Residents
Workers on the island reportedly dread the prospect of needing hospital care, fully aware of the tragic situation and the ordeal that awaits them. The OGE criticizes successive governments for their policy choices, which they claim undermine the fulfillment of public needs while simultaneously supporting business groups. Millions of euros are allocated to subsidies, tax breaks, and ‘development’ packages for large capital, yet for healthcare, the narrative remains: ‘there is no money.’
The organization finds it provocative that Corfu, an island attracting millions of tourists annually and enriching large tourism groups, lacks basic health infrastructure for its own population. It is equally challenging, they state, for Corfu to be advertised as a ‘top destination’ while its residents fear whether they will find a doctor when they fall ill.
Priorities Questioned: War Economy vs. Public Health
Simultaneously, the OGE points out that billions are channeled into the war economy, armaments, and imperialist designs, while the populace suffers from high prices, poverty, and insecurity. ‘There is money for wars, but not for our health and our lives,’ the statement declares, deeming it a mockery to witness the decline of health services when vast sums are spent on other purposes unrelated to satisfying public needs.
Demands for Immediate Action
The Corfu Central OGE demands:
- Immediate and full staffing of Corfu Hospital, Health Centers, and EKAV (National Center for Emergency Medical Care) with permanent medical and nursing personnel.
- Modern, public, and free health services for all citizens, with no co-payments for afternoon surgeries, examinations, or medications.
- Substantial state funding for public health, rather than for business groups, and no involvement or expenditure on war plans while the needs of the people remain unmet.
The organization concludes by urging collective action: ‘We defend the Health and Life of our families! All on the path of struggle, together with workers, pensioners, and all the people living on our island!’
The rally is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th, at 6:00 PM, at Porta Reale, calling on all residents to join in solidarity for better public health services.
