Corfu Hotel Employees Call for Dialogue Ahead of Tourist Season
Corfu, February 7 – Hotel employees in Corfu are calling for an open discussion with ministers, members of parliament, and political party representatives regarding the working conditions within the island’s tourism economy. The invitation, extended by the Hotel Employees Union, is for a meeting scheduled for Saturday, February 14, at the labor center’s event hall.
According to the hotel employees, this year’s tourist season is expected to be significantly different from previous ones. They anticipate that business groups will attempt to exploit new anti-labor legislative frameworks, but workers are prepared to fight against such practices. “For this reason, we consider it necessary to inform political bodies about how employees perceive these developments and their collective representation. At the same time, we want to hear how political representatives position themselves in the face of new developments and the responsibility they assume towards hotel and tourism workers,” stated the union.
Key Issues for Discussion
The specific issues raised for dialogue include:
- Tourism Economy as a privilege of multinational business groups.
- Degradation of services and inadequate tourism education.
- Intensification of work, occupational diseases, and insufficient health and safety measures in workplaces.
- Anti-labor legislation, non-existent protective framework, and lack of controls.
- Low wages, individual contracts, and sectoral collective bargaining agreements.
- Meager unemployment benefits, paid with obstacles.
- Worker outflow from the tourism economy.
The union’s invitation is addressed to Labor Minister Niki Kerameus, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Stefanos Gikas, local MPs, the regional governor, the three mayors of the island, and representatives of parliamentary groups from SYRIZA, KKE, New Left, and Greek Solution.
Background and Concerns
The union highlights that the upcoming tourist season will be a critical period for workers. They are particularly concerned about the potential for employers to leverage recent legislative changes to their disadvantage. The employees are determined to ensure that their rights are protected and that they receive fair compensation and working conditions.
The call for dialogue underscores a growing tension between labor and management in the tourism sector, a crucial industry for Corfu’s economy. Workers are seeking assurances from political leaders that their concerns will be addressed and that policies will be put in place to safeguard their interests.
The meeting on February 14 is seen as a crucial step in initiating a constructive dialogue. Hotel employees hope that this engagement will lead to tangible solutions and prevent a deterioration of working conditions in the face of increased tourist demand.
