New Public Square Opens in Northern Athens Suburb, Boosting Community Recreation
Athens, February 7, 2026 – The Patima district in Chalandri, a northern suburb of Athens, is celebrating the completion and opening of a new public square designed to significantly enhance local community life and recreational opportunities. The 1,733 square meter space, officially opened yesterday, features a range of modern amenities catering to all ages.
Modern Amenities for All Ages
The new square, bordered by Dryopidos, Achaiōn, Anatolis, and Antonis Tritsis streets, is equipped with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, inviting gathering spaces, and pergolas adorned with climbing plants. Perimeter landscaping, featuring tall trees and shrubs, further contributes to the aesthetic and ecological value of the area.
A central attraction of the new square is its modern, certified playground. Designed with a strong emphasis on safety, inclusivity, and creative play, it includes a multi-level play tower and special swings to accommodate children with disabilities. An innovative musical seesaw offers interactive play experiences, while a safety floor with 3D graphics is incorporated to stimulate imagination and creativity among young users.
Enhancing Urban Infrastructure and Flood Protection
Beyond the recreational aspects, the municipality of Chalandri has broader plans to strengthen the area’s infrastructure. A significant initiative involves the construction of a stormwater drainage system in Patima. This crucial project has been submitted for funding through the Attica Region’s programs, aiming to bolster flood protection for the neighborhood and its residents.
A Commitment to Public Spaces and Green Initiatives
The development of this new public square underscores the local municipality’s ongoing commitment to improving public spaces, increasing green areas, and enhancing recreational infrastructure within the community. This project follows other recent initiatives aimed at promoting outdoor activities and community well-being in the region. For instance, the Papagou-Cholargos Municipality recently launched ten fully marked walking routes on Mount Hymettus, and earlier this year, a 32 km hiking trail network was inaugurated in Prespes, further highlighting a regional trend towards accessible outdoor recreation.
The square is expected to become a vibrant hub for residents, fostering social interaction, physical activity, and a stronger sense of community in Patima.
