Karelias: The Greek Dynasty Dominating the Global Tobacco Industry for 136 Years

Athens, February 1, 2026 – The Karelia Tobacco Company, Greece’s largest and oldest cigarette producer, continues its 136-year legacy as a symbol of Greek business history and tradition. Established in 1888 in Kalamata, the family-owned enterprise has evolved from a regional supplier to a global powerhouse, with its products sold in over 65 countries worldwide.

A Legacy of Growth and Global Expansion

The company’s origins trace back to a small tobacco business in Kalamata, catering initially to local demand. Following the stability of the 1950s after World War II and the Greek Civil War, the Karelia family began expanding its brands nationally. A pivotal moment came in 1959 with the return of George Karelias from the United States, armed with a degree in Economics and Business Administration and innovative ideas for expansion.

Under his leadership, a new 80,000-square-meter manufacturing plant was constructed in Kalamata in 1971, and sales and marketing offices were established in Athens. The company entered the Athens Stock Exchange in 1976 as Karelia Brothers and began significant international collaborations, becoming the Greek licensed manufacturer for RJ Reynolds (now Japan Tobacco International) and producing and distributing popular brands like Winston and Camel.

The 1990s marked a period of significant international expansion, with the company adopting its current name, the Karelia Tobacco Company Inc., in 1991 and establishing an office in Sofia, Bulgaria, three years later. Further diversification included the acquisition of Meridian Duty-Free Specialists, a ship-handling company, and the establishment of Karelia Belgium and Karelia Investment in 1997.

Innovation and Market Leadership in the New Millennium

The new millennium saw Karelia continue its growth trajectory, acquiring other businesses and developing its trademark brands. The company ceased its cooperation with Japan Tobacco International and established a UK subsidiary in 2003 to distribute its brands in that market. The Bulgarian subsidiary was upgraded to a commercial import company in 2007, followed by the establishment of GK Distributors EOOD. In 2008, Karelia Tütün ve Tiçaret A.S. was established, and the company acquired the Backwoods cigar brand for distribution in Greece and duty-free markets.

Today, Karelia Tobacco Company stands as Greece’s largest cigarette manufacturer and exporter, with over 87 percent of its production directed to international markets. This makes Karelia one of Greece’s largest export businesses, with its brands reaching over 26,000 sales points across the country. The company’s current annual sales turnover is an estimated 876 million euros.

Commitment to Employees and Philanthropy

Beyond its commercial success, Karelia is consistently recognized as a top employer, prioritizing the well-being of its workforce. At the end of 2024, the company provided its employees with an extra monthly salary, a 5 percent raise, and standard gold and blue bonuses for families with children. Karelia also actively supports various charitable causes.

The company remains a family affair, with George Karelias’s son, Andreas, serving as the Managing Director, his mother, Victoria Karelias, as President, and his brother, Stathis, as Vice President.

The George and Victoria Karelias Foundation: A Legacy of Art and Philanthropy

George Karelias, an art lover with a talent for painting and a passion for literature and history, consistently contributed to educational and cultural initiatives in Messenia. In 1993, he co-founded the “George and Victoria Karelias Foundation” with his wife. This foundation significantly supports economic development, education, culture, literature, and arts, while also preserving Greek traditions and assisting those in need.

Following George Karelias’s passing in April 2000, his wife, Victoria Karelia, took over as president of the foundation. She continues to champion the preservation and promotion of Greek folk traditions, culture, arts, and the values of respect, creativity, and healthy competition. Victoria Karelia also holds positions as President of Karelia Tobacco Company, the Greek Girls’ High School of Kalamata, and Honorary President of the Association of Friends of Music of Kalamata.

The Karelia Tobacco Company’s journey from a small regional business to a global leader underscores its enduring legacy in the Greek economy and its commitment to both its employees and the broader community through significant philanthropic endeavors.
