Athens, February 1 – Amidst a climate of heightened tensions and recent explosions in Iran, both Iranian and US officials have indicated the possibility of ongoing negotiations. This development comes as a senior Iranian security official suggested a framework for talks is emerging, while US President Donald Trump also confirmed discussions.
Hints of Negotiations Emerge
Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian security official, posted on the X platform, stating, “Contrary to the atmosphere created by the artificial media war, the formation of a structure for negotiations is underway.” He did not provide further details on these potential talks.
Concurrently, US President Donald Trump told Fox News that Iran is “talking to us and we’ll see if we can do something,” without elaborating. Trump reiterated the US has a significant naval presence in the Middle East.
Explosions Rock Iran
These hints of diplomacy are set against a backdrop of several recent explosions in Iran. In Bandar Abbas, an explosion in a residential complex resulted in one death and 14 injuries. Mohammad Amin Liaghat, head of the local fire department, attributed the incident to a gas leak, stating, “The initial cause of the accident is the accumulation of leaked gas, causing the explosion,” as reported by state television.
Iranian media has been quick to dismiss any suggestions of sabotage or attacks in connection with these incidents, particularly after reports circulated on social media about a Revolutionary Guards commander being targeted. The semi-official Tasnim news agency called these reports “completely false” and confirmed an investigation into the causes of the explosions is ongoing.
In a separate incident, four people died in a gas explosion in the city of Ahvaz, near the Iraqi border, according to the state-run Tehran Times.
Israel Denies Involvement, Pentagon Silent
Two Israeli officials, speaking to Reuters, denied any Israeli involvement in the recent explosions. The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment.
These events unfold during a period of increased friction between Tehran and Washington. On January 22, US President Donald Trump stated that an “armada” was heading towards Iran, and sources indicated the US was considering options including targeted strikes against Iranian security forces, further intensifying the already tense regional climate.
