Night School Brewery in Athens Earns Prestigious USA Today Nomination
ATHENS, N.Y. – Night School, a local brewery and bar situated in the former Crossroads Brewing Company location in Athens, has received a significant nomination for USA Today’s 10 Best Awards in the ‘best new brewery’ category. The establishment, home to the distinctive Deep Fried Beers, is competing against 19 other craft breweries across the United States for this coveted recognition.
The USA Today 10Best Awards aim to highlight top-tier new breweries that have launched within the last three years, specifically since the beginning of 2023. A panel of beer experts nominated their top picks, and now the public has the opportunity to cast their votes.
From Soft Opening to National Recognition
Night School commenced its soft opening phase at the close of 2023 and officially opened its doors in April 2024. The brewery offers a diverse selection of draft beers from Deep Fried Beers, conceptualized and brewed by owner Johnny Osborne, alongside other locally sourced wines and beers.
Osborne’s inspiration for Night School originated from his passion for beer and spirits. “I thought of Night School back in 2017 and thought that would be a cool name for a bar,” he stated. “It kind of adds the education aspect of a good beer experience but, you know, mostly the idea that it’s where you go to get your education on nightlife.”
Before establishing Night School, Osborne honed his craft brewing skills while working for Crossroads, where he developed the concept for Deep Fried Beers. The brand is particularly renowned for its distinctive sours and Double IPAs.
Signature Brews and Voting Details
Among the notable offerings, the ‘Macrowave TIPA’ stands out as a potent concoction with an 11.1% ABV. For enthusiasts of red fruit flavors, the ‘Sour Patchwork 2’ is an Imperial Sour brimming with notes of raspberry, as highlighted by a USA Today 10Best panelist.
Voting for the USA Today 10Best Awards is open daily, with one vote permitted per day, until February 23 at noon. The eagerly anticipated announcement of the top 10 winners is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4. Votes can be cast directly on the USA Today 10BEST website.
Night School and Deep Fried Beers are conveniently located at 21 2nd Street in Athens. The brewery operates daily, opening at 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday, and at noon on Saturdays and Sundays.
