On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Acharavi Kindergarten in North Corfu hosted a unique environmental education activity, bringing together 44 preschoolers for a hands-on ‘seed balls’ workshop. The event, organized at the invitation of the Parents’ and Guardians’ Association, saw the participation of Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali, Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy and Environment of the Municipality of North Corfu.
What are Seed Balls and How Do They Work?
Seed balls are a simple yet effective method of sowing, used both in home gardening and in reforestation efforts and restoration of degraded areas. They protect seeds until they find suitable conditions to sprout. The children at Acharavi Kindergarten not only learned about this innovative technique but also actively participated in creating their own seed balls.
Hands-on Learning: Creating and Connecting with Nature
During the workshop, the young participants molded the balls using natural materials such as soil, clay, water, and seeds of carrots and chard. This direct engagement with natural elements stimulated their senses, improved fine motor skills, and encouraged creativity and cooperation among the children. Through this process, they understood that even a small action can contribute significantly to environmental care and regeneration.
Educational Value and Future Implications
The activity was rich in educational value, demonstrating how experiential learning through play and direct contact with soil and water helps children develop respect for nature. This approach connects theoretical knowledge with practical application, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological principles from an early age.
The Municipality of North Corfu consistently supports and promotes environmental educational activities from preschool age, recognizing the critical importance of building environmental consciousness early on.

Special appreciation is also given to the Parents’ and Guardians’ Association of Acharavi Kindergarten for their invitation and invaluable contribution to the success of this inspiring event.
