Power Outages Hit Central Corfu Following Severe Weather

Corfu, January 7 – Strong winds that have been battering the island of Corfu have led to widespread power outages in several areas of the Central Corfu Municipality. Since midnight on Monday, residents in Potamos, Evropouloi, and Kyra Chrysikou have been without electricity, as fallen tree branches have damaged the power grid.

Stormy Weather Causes Extensive Disruptions

The severe weather conditions, characterized by gale-force winds, have created significant problems across the island. The prolonged power cuts have left households and businesses in affected areas without essential services, prompting concerns among the local population.

According to local reports, the outages are a direct consequence of trees and large branches being brought down by the intense winds, disrupting power lines and infrastructure. Emergency crews have been deployed to assess the damage and commence repair work, but the extent of the impact suggests that full restoration may take some time.

Impact on Daily Life and Emergency Response

The lack of electricity has disrupted daily routines for many residents, particularly affecting heating, lighting, and communication. While no injuries have been reported, the situation highlights the vulnerability of the island’s infrastructure to extreme weather events.

Local authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and to report any further incidents related to the storm. The Civil Protection of the Central Corfu Municipality had previously issued warnings about the impending severe weather, advising citizens to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Ionian Islands region, including Corfu, has been under a ‘Red Code’ alert due to the risk of intense weather phenomena, including heavy rainfall and strong winds. These conditions have been closely monitored by meteorological services, with forecasts indicating continued stormy weather in the area.

Ongoing Efforts to Restore Power

Electricity company crews are working tirelessly to address the faults and restore power to the affected communities. However, the challenging weather conditions and the scattered nature of the damage are complicating their efforts. Residents are advised to remain patient and to follow any further instructions from local authorities.

This incident follows previous weather-related disruptions on the island, including extensive damage to the First Municipal Cemetery of Corfu in November 2025 due to a local tornado, and widespread flooding in central Corfu in late November 2025 caused by storm Adel. These events underscore the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather phenomena affecting the region.

Further updates on the power restoration efforts and the overall impact of the storm will be provided by the Central Corfu Municipality and the electricity company as the situation evolves.
