Epiphany, one of the most significant religious holidays in Orthodoxy, was celebrated with splendor and deep symbolism across Greece yesterday, January 6, 2026. From Piraeus and Athens to Thessaloniki and Phanar, the Church performed the consecration of the waters, with the presence of state and political leaders, marking the end of the Dodecahemeron and the feast of the Baptism of Christ.

Grand Celebrations in Piraeus and Athens

In Piraeus, at 11:00 AM, Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens officiated the water consecration ceremony. The event was attended by the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, and representatives of the political leadership. The festive Divine Liturgy took place at the Holy Trinity Church of Piraeus, presided over by Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus. Due to the celebrations, special traffic regulations were in effect in the port area.

In Athens, the official doxology was held at the Holy Church of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite. The water consecration ceremony took place at the Athens Municipality Reservoir, with the presence of state officials and local authorities. Among those attending the celebrations were Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis, Environment Minister Stavros Papastavrou, New Left President Alexis Haritsis, as well as members of parliament and municipal councilors.

Thessaloniki and Phanar Join the Festivities

In Phanar, PASOK-KINAL President Nikos Androulakis attended the Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at the Holy Church of Saint George. In Thessaloniki, the water consecration ceremony was held at the city’s port. Syriza President Sokrates Famellos and “Niki” President Dimitris Natsios were present at the Thessaloniki event.

The celebrations across Greece underscored the deep cultural and religious significance of Epiphany, bringing together communities and their leaders in a display of faith and tradition.
