Corfu, Greece – In the true spirit of Christmas, His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu, Paxoi, and Diapontia Islands undertook a series of pastoral visits to local institutions on December 22nd and 23rd, 2025. These visits aimed to bring comfort, joy, and the festive message of Christmas to those in need across the island.

Metropolitan’s Extensive Outreach to Vulnerable Communities

On Monday, December 22nd, Metropolitan Nektarios visited the Corfu prisons, the Municipal Nursing Home of Corfu, and the Roman Catholic Nursing Home in Corfu. The following day, Tuesday, December 23rd, his pastoral journey continued to include the General Hospital of Corfu and the Psychiatric Hospital. During these visits, His Eminence distributed generous gift packages, along with sweets and his blessings, to the residents and staff.

Metropolitan Nektarios engaged in personal conversations with prisoners, residents of the nursing homes, patients, and employees, conveying the joyous message of Christmas and offering paternal words of hope and love. This direct interaction underscored the Church’s commitment to supporting all members of the community, especially during the festive season.

Community Support and Children’s Involvement

In addition to the institutional visits, the Social Grocery Store of the Holy Metropolis, along with its branches in South Corfu, North Corfu, and Kanalia, distributed over three hundred packages of meat and other food items. These distributions benefited families regularly supported by the Holy Metropolis, highlighting the ongoing charitable work of the Church.

A touching aspect of the visits to the healthcare institutions was the accompaniment of the choir from the Sunday Schools of the Agioi Pantes Nisakiou parish. Accompanied by their priest and spiritual father, Reverend Fr. Christos Malaia, the children prepared numerous gifts and small crosses. They sang Christmas carols and other festive hymns in the hospital wards, bringing immense joy and hope to the patients. The Metropolitan was also accompanied by the Hospital Administrator, Ms. Adamantia Englezopoulou, throughout all the clinics and wards, which have recently undergone renovation.

Impact and Significance of the Visits

These pastoral visits by Metropolitan Nektarios underscore the profound role of the Church in providing spiritual and material support to the community, particularly during times of celebration and reflection. The involvement of the children’s choir further amplified the message of hope and compassion, creating memorable moments for those confined to institutions during the holidays.

The comprehensive outreach efforts, combining direct personal engagement with the distribution of essential goods, reflect a holistic approach to community welfare. The renovated hospital wards, visited by the Metropolitan, also symbolize progress in healthcare infrastructure, ensuring better conditions for patients.

Looking Ahead

The Holy Metropolis of Corfu continues its mission of charity and spiritual guidance, with these Christmas visits serving as a poignant reminder of its unwavering dedication to the well-being of the faithful and all residents of the Ionian Islands. These events reinforce the bonds between the Church and the community, fostering a sense of solidarity and shared humanity during the festive season.
