Athens, December 24 – The Municipality of Athens has made the decision to postpone the highly anticipated ‘Night of Wishes’ event, originally scheduled for Christmas Eve, December 24th. The event, which was set to take place at Kotsia Square, has been rescheduled for Friday, December 26th, at 6:00 PM.
Weather Forecast Prompts Postponement
The decision to postpone comes after the latest weather forecasts indicated the likelihood of severe weather conditions, including intense thunderstorms, across the region. Authorities prioritized public safety and the comfort of attendees in making this difficult but necessary choice.
A statement from the Municipality of Athens confirmed the change, citing adverse weather as the primary reason. This aligns with broader weather advisories for Greece, which predict strong rains, storms, and even snow in some areas during the festive period, under the weather system dubbed “White Christmas.”
Public Transport and Store Hours Affected by Holidays
Separately, public transport services in Athens will operate on a Sunday and public holiday schedule on December 25th and 26th, 2025, as well as on January 1st and 6th, 2026. This adjustment is standard for holiday periods and aims to accommodate reduced demand while ensuring essential services.
Regarding commercial establishments, stores and supermarkets will operate with special holiday hours on Christmas Eve. Details of these festive operating hours have been widely publicized to inform consumers.
Impact on Christmas Celebrations
The postponement of the ‘Night of Wishes’ is a notable change for Athenians looking forward to the Christmas Eve festivities. However, the new date on December 26th offers an alternative opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy the event once weather conditions are expected to improve.
Local authorities continue to monitor weather developments closely and advise citizens to stay informed through official channels. The aim is to ensure that all public events can proceed safely and enjoyably for everyone.
The ‘Night of Wishes’ is a cherished annual event designed to bring joy and festive spirit to the heart of Athens. Its rescheduling underscores the city’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its community.
Further updates on holiday events and services will be provided by the Municipality of Athens as necessary.
