CORFU. The path has finally been cleared for the construction of a modern swimming pool at the Nautical Athletic Club of Corfu (NAOK), following a crucial meeting that addressed previous delays. The consensus among participants was a firm commitment to expedite the project, aiming to reclaim lost time.
A History of Delays and Renewed Hope
The journey to a new NAOK swimming pool has been fraught with challenges. The initial plans for both a NAOK swimming pool and an athletics training facility in Plantrafo, Potamos, were first selected under the “Greece 2004” programme. However, neither project materialized at that time. These ambitious plans later resurfaced on the municipal agenda, being included in the “Antonis Tritsis” programme during Mayor Ydraiou’s administration. While the indoor training facility has progressed and is now under construction in Alykes, the swimming pool project became intertwined with the complex fate of the seafront area.
Overcoming Obstacles for Sports Facilities
A significant hurdle was overcome with the partly favourable resolution regarding the return of the seafront to the Central Corfu Municipality. This development has removed a key impediment, paving the way for the completion of planning for these vital sports facilities. The recent meeting, chaired by the mayor and exclusively focused on the swimming pool, saw broad agreement on this point among most attendees.
Concerns and Commitment to Speed
Despite the renewed optimism, concerns were voiced regarding the tight timelines and the need for approvals from various departments, including the Archaeological Service. However, the dominant sentiment was that any further postponements could have disastrous consequences for the project. In response, DEPAN officials have pledged to complete the necessary studies as quickly as possible, ensuring that the subsequent steps towards construction can proceed without undue delay.
Funding and Location Confirmed
It was emphasized during the meeting that once all prerequisites, including the required permits, are met, the construction of the swimming pool could be financed through future funding programmes. The project remains firmly focused on its designated location, as detailed in the technical brief, specifically where the historic NAOK swimming pool currently stands.
This renewed commitment marks a significant step forward for sports infrastructure in Corfu, promising a modern facility for the community after years of anticipation.
