Athens, December 23 – Greek police successfully uncovered a significant cache of weapons during an operation in Ano Liosia, western Athens, on December 20. The Fyli Crime Investigation and Detection Department, with assistance from the OPKE special police unit, acted on intelligence regarding illegal firearms storage at a local residence, leading to the arrest of three individuals.

Details of the Police Operation and Seized Weapons

According to a statement from the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the operation was initiated after evaluating information suggesting the presence of illegal firearms within a residence in the Ano Liosia area. The raid, conducted on December 20, meticulously executed with the support of the OPKE special police unit, proved successful in locating and seizing the illicit arsenal.

During the search, officers discovered and confiscated several items:

  • A pistol with a magazine and 21 rounds of ammunition.
  • A double-barrel shotgun, which had been reported stolen from Aspropyrgos in 2005.
  • A shotgun with its serial number deliberately filed off, hindering identification.
  • An air rifle equipped with an integrated scope.

The seizure of these weapons underscores the ongoing efforts by Greek authorities to combat illegal firearms trafficking and possession within the country.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

Following the discovery, a case file was immediately established for violations of firearms legislation. Three suspects were apprehended in connection with the weapons cache. The arrested individuals include a 44-year-old woman, a 48-year-old man, and a 71-year-old man. All three were subsequently brought before the competent prosecutor for further legal proceedings, where they will face charges related to the illegal possession and storage of firearms.

The Hellenic Police continue their investigations to determine the origin of the weapons and any potential connections to organized criminal activities. The successful operation highlights the commitment of Greek law enforcement to maintaining public safety and security by actively targeting illegal arms.

This incident is part of a broader national effort to crack down on illegal gun ownership and related criminal enterprises. Authorities encourage citizens to report any suspicious activities related to illegal firearms to help ensure the safety of communities across Greece.
