LASY South Corfu Proposes Resolution on “Unacceptable Road Network Condition”

Corfu, Greece – December 22, 2025 – The Popular Rally (LASY) of South Corfu has formally submitted a draft resolution to the South Corfu Municipal Council, addressing what it describes as the “unacceptable condition of the road network” throughout the municipality. The proposal, presented during the 30th Regular Session of the Municipal Council, calls for immediate action from the government to rectify the dangerous state of local roads.

LASY Criticizes Council’s Refusal to Prioritize Road Safety

According to LASY, their initial request to include a discussion on the dangerous road network and safe passage for citizens was denied by the Council President, despite only six items being on the agenda for today’s session. LASY views this as an “anti-democratic” stance, detached from the urgent needs of the citizens and the pressing issues facing the municipality.

“Because the issue of the dangerous road network is the biggest problem our citizens are facing at this time, because we believe that, regardless of your unacceptable attitude, the issue must be addressed by the Municipal Council, we are reintroducing the issue in the form of a resolution and ask for it to be put to a vote at today’s regular session,” stated the LASY representatives in their proposal.

Key Concerns Highlighted in the Resolution

The proposed resolution emphasizes that the provincial and municipal road networks, including the central axis connecting South Corfu with the city, secondary alternative routes, connecting roads between villages and settlements, and internal road networks within municipal communities, are all facing severe problems. These issues are attributed to a combination of factors:

  • Underfunding: Insufficient financial resources allocated to the municipality.
  • Withheld Funds: The government’s retention of institutionalized funds owed to the municipality.
  • Lack of Interventions: A prolonged absence of maintenance and repair work over many years.
  • Poor Construction: Substandard workmanship in previous road projects.
  • Natural Wear and Tear: Deterioration due to age and heavy use.
  • Extreme Weather Conditions: Significant damage caused by adverse weather events.

These factors have led to a multitude of problems, including damage and potholes, ground subsidence, and collapsing retaining walls. Consequently, passage for vehicles is problematic, in some cases impossible, and consistently dangerous at numerous points across the road network. LASY also warns that existing road damage creates conditions for further deterioration and unforeseen consequences.

Demands to the Government and Threat of Mobilization

Recognizing the gravity of the problem, the risks posed to citizens, and the potential damage to the local economy, the Municipal Council, through LASY’s proposal, demands the following from the government:

  1. Immediate Assessment: The prompt arrival of relevant services to the municipality to assess the extent of the problem and propose solutions.
  2. Emergency Funding and Restitution: The provision of emergency funding and the release of withheld institutionalized resources owed to the municipality. These funds are crucial for conducting necessary studies, repairing damages, and implementing preventive interventions where required.
  3. Technical Staff Recruitment: The hiring of technical personnel with permanent employment contracts for the technical services department, to establish a team dedicated to repairing damages within the municipality.

LASY explicitly states that if the government fails to respond promptly to these demands, the Municipality of South Corfu will call upon its citizens to engage in public mobilizations. The resolution was signed by Pelais Stamatios and Kapodistrias Anastasios on behalf of the Popular Rally.

The current deplorable state of the road infrastructure poses significant safety hazards for residents and visitors alike, and its impact on the local economy, particularly tourism, could be substantial if not addressed swiftly and effectively.
