Maria Karystianou, the president of the ‘Tempi 2023′ Victims’ Association, has revealed plans to establish a new political party. This potential party could contest elections, but Karystianou has firmly stated that there will be no cooperation with former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Karystianou Leads New Movement
“I am at the forefront, along with other people, trying to organize this movement,” Karystianou noted during an interview on Kontra Channel. This initiative aims to provide a fresh alternative in the Greek political landscape.
Conditions for Electoral Participation
When asked if this movement should take the form of a party and participate in elections, Karystianou responded: “Probably yes, if it is ready, if it is properly completed, if the right people are found, if all these conditions are created, then of course it will emerge, and it will do well to emerge because we must have something to vote for, an alternative.” This statement underscores the conditional nature of the party’s formation and its electoral ambitions, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation and the assembly of suitable individuals.
No Alliance with Previous Political Parties
Regarding a potential collaboration with Alexis Tsipras, Maria Karystianou was unequivocal: “There is no possibility of cooperation with any of the previous political parties. Anything that has touched the old system does not concern us. Especially Mr. Tsipras, who was prime minister.” This strong stance highlights a desire for a complete break from established political structures and figures, indicating a focus on new, untainted leadership.
A Movement of Citizens
Karystianou further elaborated on the nature of this new movement, describing it as one “that will consist of citizens not involved in political parties who have the knowledge, the willingness, the vision, the soul, because we are going for something very big.” This vision emphasizes a grassroots, citizen-led approach, free from the perceived baggage of traditional political affiliations. She also made references to Convention 717 and the struggles of farmers, suggesting a broad agenda that addresses various societal issues.
The announcement by Maria Karystianou marks a significant development in Greek politics, potentially introducing a new force driven by public dissatisfaction and a desire for change. The emphasis on citizen involvement and a clear rejection of past political collaborations suggests a movement aiming to carve out a distinct identity.
The future trajectory of this movement, including its formalization into a political party and its eventual electoral participation, remains contingent on meeting the conditions outlined by Karystianou. However, the initial declaration signals a clear intent to offer a new alternative to Greek voters.
The focus on issues such as Convention 717 and the agricultural sector indicates a platform that could resonate with various segments of the population, particularly those feeling disenfranchised by existing political parties. The coming months will likely reveal more details about the structure, leadership, and specific policy positions of Karystianou’s nascent political endeavor.
