All municipal services and the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company (DEYAK) of North Corfu Municipality will remain symbolically closed tomorrow, Tuesday, December 16, 2025. This decision aligns with a unanimous resolution by the Hellenic Union of Municipalities and Communities (KEDE), which calls for municipalities nationwide to close their services on the day the state budget is voted on.
Nationwide Mobilization Against Underfunding
The North Corfu Municipality and DEYAK are participating in this pan-Hellenic mobilization of Local Government, protesting against what they describe as unconstitutional financial bleeding, the assignment of responsibilities without necessary resources, and the institutional and economic strangulation of municipalities.
On the same day, at 12:00 PM, the Mayor of North Corfu, Giorgos Macheimaris, and Deputy Mayor Nikos Cheirdaris will join representatives from all municipalities across the country in a large demonstration outside the Parliament building in Athens.
Growing Institutional and Economic Pressure
In recent years, the institutional, economic, and operational strangulation of Local Government has intensified. Responsibilities and resources are being removed from municipalities, understaffed services are unable to meet public needs, operating costs have skyrocketed, and Greece lags significantly behind European standards for local government organization.
Local Government is struggling to operate without adequate resources, personnel, responsibilities, and respect for its role. The continuous underfunding, understaffing, and systematic weakening of Local Government directly undermine its ability to provide essential services to citizens.
North Corfu Municipality’s Commitment
The North Corfu Municipality remains committed to its efforts for a Local Government that stands by its citizens and defends its institutional role.
The municipality emphasizes that the ongoing financial constraints and lack of support from the central government are severely impacting their capacity to effectively manage local affairs and deliver crucial services, such as waste management, infrastructure maintenance, and social welfare programs.
This protest highlights a broader issue faced by local authorities across Greece, where municipalities are increasingly burdened with responsibilities without the corresponding allocation of funds or personnel. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s participation in the demonstration outside Parliament underscores the urgency and widespread nature of these concerns.
The closure of services is intended as a symbolic act to draw attention to the critical situation and to pressure the government to address the long-standing demands for greater financial autonomy and support for local administration.
Citizens are advised to plan accordingly for the temporary closure of municipal offices and DEYAK services on December 16th.
