The Municipality of South Corfu informs its citizens that it is joining the nationwide mobilization of Local Government, as decided by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE). This action is a protest against the ongoing underfunding and serious operational problems encountered by municipalities throughout the country.

Municipal Services Closed on December 16, 2025

As part of this mobilization, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the services of the South Corfu Municipality housed in the Municipal Buildings will not be operating for public service. This temporary closure is a direct consequence of the widespread issues affecting local government functionality.

Key Issues Highlighted by the Municipality

The participation of the South Corfu Municipality aims to bring to light critical issues impacting the operation of Local Government. These include:

  • Chronic underfunding, which severely limits the capacity of municipalities to provide essential services.
  • Understaffing of municipal services, leading to delays and reduced efficiency in public administration.
  • The transfer of responsibilities to local authorities without the necessary resources and means, creating an unsustainable burden.
  • The urgent need for substantial reinforcement of Central Autonomous Resources and the institutional and financial independence of municipalities, crucial for effective local governance.

These systemic problems hinder the ability of local governments to effectively serve their communities and manage local affairs.

Mayor Ioannis Kavvadias to Participate in Athens Mobilization

In line with these efforts, the Mayor of South Corfu, Mr. Ioannis Kavvadias, will attend the nationwide mobilization of Mayors in Athens. He will also participate in the extraordinary General Assembly of KEDE, where he will convey the demands of the South Corfu Municipality and the local community. This direct involvement underscores the gravity of the situation and the municipality’s commitment to advocating for necessary reforms.

Call for Citizen Understanding and Support

The Municipality of South Corfu requests the understanding of its citizens for the temporary suspension of services. It calls upon everyone to support this collective endeavor to defend the functionality, sustainability, and institutional role of Local Government. This unified stance reflects a broader call for systemic change to ensure that municipalities can effectively fulfill their mandate.

The mobilization on December 16, 2025, serves as a critical moment for local authorities to voice their concerns and push for meaningful solutions to the challenges they face. The outcome of these protests could significantly influence future policy decisions regarding local government funding and autonomy in Greece.
