Athens is buzzing with Christmas spirit, preparing for the eve of the longest night of the year with a spectacular lineup of ten musical events spread across the city. The Athens Municipality Festival invites both residents and visitors to join in a grand, open celebration.
Mayor Haris Doukas Highlights City Transformation
Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, emphasized the transformative nature of the upcoming events. “On Saturday, December 20th, for an entire evening, Athens will transform into a brilliant stage, from Monastiraki and Victoria Square to Lamprini, Pagrati, Ermou, and Omonia. Musical groups, street parties, jazz, classical music, dance, yoga, and thematic events will fill the city’s neighborhoods with sparkle and sounds, as Athens enters the final stretch for Christmas. We invite you to walk, dance, sing, and discover festive Athens,” stated Mayor Doukas.
Detailed Event Schedule for December 20th:
- Pizza Out of the Box – Christmas Latin Party, Kerameikos | Time: 14:30
On Salaminos Street in Kerameikos, a small Latin American celebration will unfold, featuring steaming sandos, fragrant empanadas, and vinyl records transporting attendees from Rio to Havana. The pedestrian street will be adorned with bright, colorful aesthetics and a summer vibe.
- Protogenous Street Party | Time: 17:00
Protogenous Street will host a vibrant hub of music and creativity for two nights. On the first night (December 20th), DJs will set the rhythm, while on the second night (December 21st), emerging alternative bands will take over. Artists and small surprises await the public, with local shops and workshops remaining open to enhance the evenings with flavors and aromas.
- Lamprini Street Party | Time: 19:00
Lamprini transforms into the new hotspot for the electronic music scene. ENTEKA Athens will set up an impressive, bright, and lively stage in this northern Athens neighborhood, featuring some of the city’s most active DJs and music producers for the most electric party of the year.
- Night Yoga, Rizari Park | Time: 19:00
An invitation to night yoga at Rizari Park. The holidays are not just about music, dance, and singing, but also an opportunity for invigoration and well-being. Under the trees, in Rizari Park, guided by experienced instructors, yoga becomes accessible to all: advanced practitioners, beginners, or those simply wishing to try a new wellness habit.
- Agia Fanfara from Monastiraki to Avissinias Square | Time: 19:30
This year, Athens doesn’t just decorate; it celebrates and dances to Balkan rhythms. Agia Fanfara, an orchestra of 25 musicians with brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, will flood the streets of Athens, igniting the festive spirit with the power of its music. From Monastiraki Square to Avissinias Square, the band will create a Balkan procession.
- Melachrinos Velenzas: A Christmas Piano Story, Victoria Square | Time: 19:30
Melachrinos Velenzas, the artist known for his widely traveled “Lemon,” will lead a musical journey to Victoria Square. His Piano Stories, small tales born from memory and the present, combine with Christmas nuances, inviting an encounter that reminds us that a piano is enough to express what words cannot.
- Alexandros Affolter Quartet – Sinatra with a Twist, Pagrati | Time: 20:00
Christmas isn’t complete without jazz, and on the eve of the longest night, the Athens Municipality Festival brings Frank Sinatra’s melodies to Messolonghi Square. Dutch singer Alexandros Affolter collaborates with drummer Serafim Bellos, performing the great American artist’s songs with a fresh jazz perspective. Classic, beloved songs, as well as selections from his personal discography, are included in a program that revives an era of great brilliance.
- En Lefko Party, Omonia | Time: 20:00
The party moves to Omonia. The eve of the longest night transforms the arcade of the Moxy Athens City Hotel into a dynamic dance stage, glowing with light and movement, literally in the heart of the city. En Lefko 87.7 takes over the decks, bringing the station’s most beloved DJs and producers to a stage filled with joy and dancing.
- The Storyville Ragtimers, Voukourestiou Pedestrian Street | Time: 21:00
The Storyville Ragtimers bring the pulse of 1920s New Orleans, taking us back to an era where jazz was a way of life. They transport us to the nocturnal streets of Storyville, the rhythms of Basin Street, and the sound of riverboats traveling the Mississippi. With the aura of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and all those who became jazz pioneers, they set up a Christmas evening full of swing, fairy lights, and sparkling vintage style on Voukourestiou pedestrian street, where the magic of jazz is reborn.
- De Profundis, Ermou Pedestrian Street | Time: 21:00
The musical ensemble De Profundis leaves the conservatory hall and steps into the city’s most vibrant spot. On Ermou, a group of virtuoso musicians brings classical music to where it breathes freely. With passion, skill, and stage energy, they transform Athens’ most commercial street into an open-air stage of high art. On the eve of the longest night of the year (December 21st), the city is adorned with melodies that bridge yesterday and today, proving that classical music shines everywhere.
This initiative is implemented within the framework of the project, “Actions for the promotion, enhancement, and advancement of tourism in the Municipality of Athens”/Sub-project 1, which is part of the “Attica 2021-2027” Program, OPS 6018475, and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
