The Corfu Philharmonic Society (FEK) is hosting a special Christmas concert featuring the enchanting tale of ‘Frikantela, the Witch Who Hated Carols’. This musical adaptation of Eugene Trivizas’ clever fairy tale will be presented in two performances on Saturday, December 20th, at the Municipal Theatre of Corfu.

The Story of Frikantela

Frikantela, the central character, despises anything that begins with the word “kala” (good), and especially Christmas carols. When she hears children singing, her rage leads her to transform them into frogs, kittens, and other animals. However, the children’s persistent caroling, featuring tunes from various parts of Greece, eventually melts Frikantela’s heart. Through a series of comedic episodes, they convince her of the carols’ beauty, leading her to dance and sing along with her new, small friends.

Musical Adaptation by Alkis Baltas

The musical score for this captivating story was created by Alkis Baltas. He masterfully integrated excerpts from classical composers such as Mendelssohn and Rossini, alongside his own original compositions. Baltas also arranged the traditional carols sung by the transformed children and those from different Greek regions, adding a unique musical dimension to the narrative.

Performances and Participants

The concert will feature the Symphonic Orchestra of the Corfu Philharmonic Society and the “Agios Spyridon” Children’s Choir, conducted by Christina Kalliaridou. The beloved fairy tale will be narrated by Petros Gallias.

Two performances are scheduled for Saturday, December 20th, at the Municipal Theatre:

  • First performance: 11:00 AM, conducted by Giannis Logiadis.
  • Second performance: 8:00 PM, conducted by Alkis Baltas.

Admission to both concerts is free, offering a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to experience a magical Christmas celebration.

A Festive Tradition in Corfu

These concerts are a cherished part of Corfu’s Christmas traditions, bringing together the community through music and storytelling. The Corfu Philharmonic Society continues its legacy of enriching the island’s cultural life, especially during the festive season.

The event is expected to draw a large audience, eager to enjoy the festive spirit and the artistic talent of the participating musicians and choir. The free entry ensures accessibility for all, fostering a sense of togetherness and holiday cheer.

This initiative by the Corfu Philharmonic Society underscores the importance of cultural events in strengthening community bonds and celebrating local traditions. The blend of classical music, a beloved Greek fairy tale, and the joyous spirit of Christmas carols promises an unforgettable experience for all ages.
