Corfu, December 15 – The North Corfu Municipality is intensifying its efforts to protect and promote the natural beauty of the region by integrating the Nymfes, Kyprianades, and Pagi waterfalls into its comprehensive ZOE program. This strategic move, announced by Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy and Environment, Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali, underscores the municipality’s commitment to safeguarding the unique environmental, ecological, and physiognomic value of these natural monuments.

Expanding Environmental Protection Initiatives

This initiative is a continuation of the North Corfu Municipality’s broader strategy to enhance and protect significant environmental and cultural landmarks. Previous endeavors have included the preservation of watermills in Klimatia and Anthropograva, as well as the Antinioti Lagoon. The ZOE program systematically expands this approach, now encompassing the Nymfes, Kyprianades, and Pagi waterfalls within a unified framework of sustainable environmental enhancement.

The Ecological Significance of the Waterfalls

The waterfalls are iconic natural monuments in North Corfu, nestled within a delicate and rich ecosystem that combines elements of forest, riparian, and wetland environments. The presence of flowing water, dense vegetation, and distinctive geomorphological relief creates microclimates of high ecological importance.

The flora surrounding the waterfalls is characterized by abundant riparian vegetation, with dominant species such as plane trees (Platanus orientalis), alders, oaks, and elms, alongside a variety of shrubs and herbaceous plants. In shady and moist areas, mosses, ferns, and lichens thrive, serving as bioindicators of good environmental quality.

The waterfalls and adjacent streams host significant fauna. Amphibians, including frogs and newts, which depend directly on clean fresh water, are found in these areas, as are reptiles like water snakes and lizards, which utilize the moist banks. Additionally, the wider area serves as a refuge for small and medium-sized mammals such as hedgehogs, martens, and foxes. The presence of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), an indicator species for healthy wetland ecosystems, has also been recorded in Corfu’s aquatic networks.

The rich ornithofauna associated with the forest and aquatic habitats of the waterfalls further enhances their importance, as these species contribute to natural balance and the preservation of biodiversity.

Sustainable Development and Public Awareness

Through the ZOE program, the North Corfu Municipality aims for a holistic and gentle approach to highlighting these natural monuments. This approach prioritizes environmental protection, public information, and raising environmental awareness among both residents and visitors. This initiative is an integral part of the municipality’s overall strategy to promote sustainable development, circular economy principles, and responsible management of its natural resources.

The inclusion of the Nymfes, Kyprianades, and Pagi waterfalls in the ZOE program represents a substantial intervention to safeguard North Corfu’s natural treasures and ensure their preservation, intact and vibrant, for future generations.
