Corfu, December 12 – Religious celebrations honoring the memory of Saint Spyridon the Wonderworker continued on Friday evening, December 12, 2025, in Corfu, with an Archiepiscopal Vespers held at the Holy Pilgrimage. The service was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Meliton of Philadelphia, representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Metropolitan Meliton’s Homily Emphasizes Saint Spyridon’s Legacy

Addressing the large congregation, Metropolitan Meliton highlighted that Saint Spyridon received virtues and spiritual education from his mother and grandmother during his childhood. He emphasized that Saint Spyridon did not conceal these gifts but cultivated them, leading the people of God to recognize his character and request him as their bishop in Trimythous.

Metropolitan Meliton further elaborated on Saint Spyridon’s pivotal role during the era of Arius’ heresy, which posited Christ as a creation. Despite his simple demeanor and knowledge, Saint Spyridon staunchly defended the true faith using the term “homoousios” (of the same essence), and together with other bishops, enshrined this truth in the Creed.

The Enduring Miracle of Saint Spyridon in Corfu

The Metropolitan underscored that believers continue to experience the mystery of Saint Spyridon, who has performed miracles for 18 centuries and whose sacred relics now reside in Corfu. He recounted an instance where a Patriarch once wished for the return of the holy relic to Constantinople, but the Saint Himself deterred him.

The Metropolitan stressed that the Saint’s relic is a treasure for the region, inviting all to venerate him, to pray to him, and to entrust every request and anxiety to him, in order to receive God’s grace.

Gratitude and a Call to Preserve Corfiot Traditions

Concluding his address, Metropolitan Meliton expressed his gratitude to His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu for the invitation and the love shown. He also conveyed his deep appreciation for the traditional Corfiot chanting and urged the people of Corfu to preserve their rich traditions.

The event drew a significant number of faithful, underscoring the deep reverence held for Saint Spyridon in Corfu and the broader Orthodox Christian world. The presence of Metropolitan Meliton from the Ecumenical Patriarchate further elevated the spiritual significance of the evening.

The Archiepiscopal Vespers served as a spiritual highlight in the ongoing celebrations dedicated to Saint Spyridon, a figure revered for his unwavering faith, miraculous interventions, and profound theological contributions to the early Church. The atmosphere was one of solemn devotion, with hymns and prayers filling the sacred space, uniting the community in worship and remembrance.

The preservation of such religious traditions, as highlighted by Metropolitan Meliton, plays a crucial role in maintaining the cultural and spiritual identity of Corfu, a place deeply intertwined with the life and miracles of Saint Spyridon.
