Corfu, Greece – The Sanitation and Recycling Department of the Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands has announced the imposition of 14 new fines over the past few days. These penalties target various infractions of the local cleanliness regulations, with the goal of fostering a culture of responsibility and maintaining the island’s cleanliness.
Details of the Recent Fines
The fines were distributed across several categories of violations, highlighting common issues in waste management:
- Ten (10) fines were issued for vehicles parked in front of waste bins (Article 7.8 of the regulations), each carrying a penalty of 200 euros. This measure aims to ensure unhindered access for waste collection vehicles.
- Two (2) fines were imposed for placing bulky items on sidewalks, roadways, or other public spaces (Article 8.1.c), with each violation resulting in a 300 euro fine. This addresses the aesthetic and functional impact of improper bulky waste disposal.
- One (1) fine was given for depositing waste outside bins or without proper packaging (Article 7.4). The penalty for this specific violation is 100 euros per item, bag, or package, emphasizing the importance of correct waste containment.
- One (1) fine was levied against businesses, including health-related establishments, wholesalers, supermarkets, and commercial stores, for failing to minimize the volume of their waste (Articles 13.3 & 13.7.a). This fine amounts to 400 euros per item, bag, or package, underscoring the responsibility of commercial entities in waste reduction.
Key Prohibitions Under the Cleanliness Regulations
The Municipality reiterates several key prohibitions from the Cleanliness Regulations, which are designed to guide residents and businesses towards more responsible practices:
- Depositing waste outside designated bins is strictly forbidden.
- Placing bulky items on sidewalks, roadways, or public spaces is not allowed.
- Failure to compress or minimize packaging waste before disposal in appropriate bins is prohibited.
- Parking vehicles in front of waste bins is an offense.
- Incorrect management and intentional abandonment of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in bins or public areas are also forbidden.
The Municipality stresses that the imposition of these fines is not punitive but rather aims to cultivate an understanding that adhering to simple rules is sufficient to keep Corfu clean and functional. The full Cleanliness Regulations are available on the Municipality’s website (corfu.gr), serving as a valuable guide for proper waste disposal and management – an act of respect towards the island and its citizens.
