The Cleaning and Recycling Service of the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality has recently issued fourteen (14) new fines for violations of the Cleanliness Regulation. These measures are part of an ongoing effort to maintain the island’s cleanliness and promote responsible waste management among residents.

Details of the Imposed Fines

The fines were levied for a range of infractions, with specific penalties outlined in the municipal regulation:

  • Ten (10) fines were issued for vehicles parked in front of waste bins (Article 7.8). Each fine amounts to two hundred (200) euros.
  • Two (2) fines were imposed for placing bulky items on pavements, roadways, or other public spaces (Article 8.1.c). The penalty for each of these violations is three hundred (300) euros.
  • One (1) fine was given for discarding waste outside of bins or without proper packaging (Article 7.4). This fine is one hundred (100) euros per item, bag, or package.
  • One (1) fine was issued to a health interest establishment, wholesale business, supermarket, or commercial store for failing to minimize the volume of their waste (Articles 13.3 & 13.7.a). The fine for this violation is four hundred (400) euros per item, bag, or package.

The Municipality emphasizes that these fines are not punitive but rather educational, aiming to foster an understanding that simple rules can ensure a clean and functional environment for everyone.

Key Prohibitions Under the Cleanliness Regulation

The Cleanliness Regulation explicitly prohibits several actions to ensure public hygiene and order:

  • Disposing of waste outside of designated bins.
  • Placing bulky items on pavements, roadways, or other public spaces.
  • Failing to compress or minimize packaging waste before disposal in appropriate bins.
  • Parking vehicles in front of waste bins, obstructing collection.
  • Improper management and deliberate abandonment of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in bins or public areas.

The full Cleanliness Regulation is available on the Municipality’s website (corfu.gr), serving as a comprehensive guide for proper waste disposal and management. Adherence to these regulations is presented as an act of respect towards the island and its fellow citizens.

Small Green Point for Responsible Waste Management

In a further effort to support responsible waste management, the Small Green Point on Eptanisou Street (Trias Gefyries area) is now operational. This facility provides residents with an organized space for depositing recyclable materials and bulky items, facilitating their controlled and proper management and preventing their abandonment in outdoor areas.

The operating hours for the Small Green Point are Monday to Saturday, from 08:30 to 15:00, excluding public holidays.

All citizens are strongly urged to demonstrate responsibility and contribute to preserving the unique beauty of Corfu. The Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality continues its commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all.
