Athens International Airport (AIA) has concluded November 2025 with an exceptional performance, marking it as the third strongest growth month of the year with a 9.6% increase in passenger traffic. This surge highlights the airport’s successful strategy in boosting traffic during off-peak seasons, a key objective for the year.
Record-Breaking November Contributes to Annual Success
November 2025 saw an additional 205.5 thousand passengers, comprising 31.6 thousand domestic and 173.9 thousand international travelers. This considerable increase contributed to an overall growth of 6.6% for the period of January to November 2025 compared to the previous year, translating to 1.96 million more passengers than the record-setting year of 2024. Significantly, over 90% of the additional passengers in 2025 were international.
The robust growth in November follows impressive performances in January (+14.5%) and March (+10.8%), underscoring Athens’ increasing appeal as a year-round destination. The airport’s efforts to smooth out seasonality by attracting more visitors during traditionally quieter months are clearly yielding positive results.
International Traffic Dominates and Germany Leads the Way
International traffic further solidified its market share at AIA, reaching 72% in November 2025, a 2% improvement from November of the previous year. This indicates a strong preference for Athens among international travelers.
Flight operations also saw a substantial increase, with an 8.2% rise in total flights for November 2025 compared to the same month last year. International flights surged by 11.0%, while domestic flights increased by 3.6%.
In the fiercely competitive TOP20 International markets, Germany ascended to the top position in passenger traffic, surpassing Italy, which now holds the second spot. Almost all of the TOP20 International markets experienced growth compared to November 2024. Egypt led this growth with an impressive 39.1% increase, followed by Denmark with 37.5%, and Spain with 31.5%.
Spain’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as it climbed to become Athens’ 6th strongest International market in direct traffic, up from its 8th position in November 2024. This significant leap highlights the growing connectivity and popularity of Athens among Spanish travelers.
Long-Haul Markets Show Promising Growth
The long-haul markets also contributed to the overall positive trend. China registered the highest growth compared to November 2024, with a 25.8% increase, followed by the United States with 5.3%, and Canada with 3.1%. These figures suggest a broadening reach for Athens International Airport, attracting travelers from distant regions.
Athens International Airport Reaches New Heights
As of January to November 2025, Athens International Airport has already served 31.68 million passengers. This figure is just 170 thousand passengers shy of the full-year total for 2024, effectively meaning that AIA has already surpassed its previous annual record with traffic equivalent to just three more days of operations.
In summary, Athens International Airport has emphatically declared 2025 as its new record year, driven by strategic initiatives to enhance off-peak travel, a strong performance in international markets, and consistent growth across various regions. This remarkable achievement underscores Athens’ growing importance as a major European travel hub.
