In a series of operational actions by the Hellenic Coast Guard, significant incidents were recorded in Samos, Corfu, and Skyros during the early morning hours of Monday, December 8, 2025. These events were detailed in a relevant announcement by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.

Tragedy in Samos During Migrant Smuggling Operation

In Samos, the Port Authority was alerted to a speedboat transporting foreign nationals towards the northern coast of the island. Two Coast Guard patrol boats were immediately mobilized and located the vessel disembarking individuals on the ‘Svala’ beach in the Vourliotes area.

The boat operator attempted to evade capture, but after a pursuit, he ran the speedboat aground in the ‘Tsabou’ area and fled on foot. During the subsequent search, the body of a minor with visible injuries was found on ‘Svala’ beach. The minor’s body was transported to the General Hospital of Samos for a post-mortem examination.

In cooperation with a FRONTEX team, a total of 37 foreign nationals were located and transferred to the Closed Controlled Structure of Samos. Among them, a 30-year-old Iranian national was identified and arrested as the trafficker. He faces charges of illegal transportation of third-country nationals, an act that resulted in death, illegal entry into the country, and disobedience. The speedboat was confiscated.

Drug Bust in Corfu Leads to Arrest

In Corfu, officers from the Regional Drug Enforcement Team and the security office of the Central Port Authority arrested a 46-year-old Greek national for violating drug laws.

At the new port of Corfu, following an indication from the drug detection dog ‘STITS,’ a suspicious package was found in the luggage compartment of a KTEL bus. The recipient was arrested when it was confirmed that the package contained an improvised package with 37.70 grams of raw cannabis. An additional 3.60 grams were found in his possession. The narcotics were confiscated.

Urgent Medical Transport from Skyros

Finally, under the coordination of the Coast Guard’s Operations Center, a 76-year-old patient requiring immediate hospital care was transported from Skyros to Kymi aboard the passenger-car ferry ‘ACHILLEAS’.
