The Athens Short Film Festival 2025 is set to captivate audiences at the Elli Cinema from December 11 to 14, showcasing a diverse selection of 45 short films from 22 countries. This year, the festival continues its tradition of spotlighting rising talent from Greece and beyond, bringing to the forefront fresh and daring voices in independent cinema.
Themes Reflecting Contemporary Society
The films featured in this year’s festival delve into a range of pressing contemporary issues, including racism and homophobia, friendships and alienation in modern society, romantic relationships and sexuality, as well as gender identities. These topics are central to the narratives presented by the new generation of filmmakers, offering a powerful reflection of current political and social upheavals.
The festival program is divided into seven thematic sections, combining various film genres to highlight the broad spectrum of meanings and expressions that short films can offer. Submissions for this year’s ASFF clearly indicate that short filmmakers are utilizing cinema as a medium to address the complexities of our times. Their approaches vary, from comedic fictional stories and authentic narratives to surreal and sci-fi elements, and even animated characters.
Return of the Shorts Mixtapes
For the second consecutive year, the popular ‘Shorts Mixtapes’ return. These are three distinct film programs, each inspired by homemade cassette tapes, sharing a common theme, aesthetic, or film genre. This year’s mixtapes include: ‘Shorts mixtape: BFFs’ exploring friendships, ‘Shorts mixtape: NSFW’ delving into the exploration of sexuality and queer spaces for free expression, and ‘Shorts mixtape: WTF’ presenting realistic stories with a touch of surrealism and sarcasm.
Featured Films and Special Events
Among the notable films at this year’s festival, audiences can explore the markets of Athens in Kostas Fountas-Aloupogiannis’s ‘In the Bazaar,’ and witness the landscapes of Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s through the archival material of Teo Panagopoulos’s ‘The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing.’ The festival also features ’27’ by Flóra Anna Buda, a Palme d’Or winning film that addresses the challenges faced by Generation Z.
In addition to the screenings, the festival will host Q&A sessions with directors from Greece and abroad, providing valuable insights into their creative processes. Parallel events are also planned to enrich the festival experience for attendees.
